Red face Inspecting a Tranny

So i got this S4 tranny from some one on the forum. nice dude was willing to drive down to meet me half in Palmdale. Anywho. i bought from him cuz mine is starting to grind 3rd and 2nd gears. not too bad i guess but i wanted to be proactive and have a back up in case my current tranny dumped out all at once.
so before doing anything to it i started cleaning it. the guy i bought it from said that none of the gears grind but the bell housing is filthy with grease because of a rear rotor bad seal leak or something?

so i guess since this is my first tranny im going to inspect i want to know what i should be looking out for? or at least a right up on how to disassemble and inspect properly. i searched for something similar in the forum use a some key words but came up empty handed.

at the moment the tranny has a two face completion as i only got to clean one said so far.

this is what i looked like over all.
<a href="http://s287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/jamak85/?action=view&amp;current=IMG-20120821-00006.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll157/jamak85/IMG-20120821-00006.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

and this is the other side that scrubbed down.

first thing is first, check to make sure all the gears work. install a shifter and work it through the gears working the input shaft while using your free hand to feel the output shaft rotation. obviously each gear change will increase output shaft speed and reverse will work in reverse direction, this will let you know if the transmission is locked out of gear. 4th gear is a 1:1 ratio so the input shaft will work at exactly the same speed as your output shaft.

if it all tests ok in that respect you should replace the rear output seal, replace the 1/2 gate spring(wire spring inside the shifter housing that always breaks) and reseal the shifter housing plate.

there is no way of testing the syncros out of the vehicle for grinding or wear so you will just have to install it and cross your fingers.

Input shaft would be the were the shifter is installed i assume and the output shaft is the the rod i see coming out of the of the from the left into back into the tranny? correct?

that trans doesn't have the ribbed bellhousing, so its an early S4. the switches are for reverse/5th and either neutral or 1st and second, your car will have them too.

Input shaft is inside the big round portion that resembles a bell. Output is the hole under the shifter

Also for future reference Purple Power says you shouldn't use it on Aluminum and the case is aluminum. At the shop we have found Pinesol works really at degreasing and is Aluminum safe. Also mixing up some Tide laundry detergent in water works very well too.

Using purple power in small amounts quickly is OK on aluminum, you just can't let it sit. It's a very strong base and will turn the aluminum a milky white color if left on too long.
