Inside of a TPS

After doing the light test and the resistance test on my
TPS, I've determined that it is bad. No readings from either test,
so I unplugged it and the cars runs allot better without it
being connected. My car died quit often and was sluggish
at acceleration. Now it doesn't die and has Satifactory
acceleration, but I do getting small popping backfires when
deaccelerating.

My question is; What's inside a TPS? I plan on cutting
it open this week and finding out. Has anyone ever disassembled a TPS, and can they be repaired?

Also Auto zone has one for 299.00 for an 89 RX7, but
the Dealer says that there was 4 different ones for the
89. How does Auto Zone just have one model?

It's basically a voltage divider. 5V goes in one wire and is divided between the other two wires based on the sliding arm's position along a resistor. Part of the 5V goes to the ECU, the rest goes to ground.

If you look at the ECU wiring diagram there's a little representation of the TPS's internals to show the relationship between the wires. It'll make it a bit clearer to understand.

TPS problems are usually caused by broken or dirty contacts that cause an interuption of current flow.

Check with Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda in Woodbridge, VA for TPS. This guy is great to work with and they discount all Mazda parts 40% for club members. The phone is 888-533-3400, ask for Ray. I bought TPS from him for $ 272.00 and they ship everything free. I have an 89 RX GTU. I have ordered several other parts from Ray and it's the only place I'll order from if I need Mazda parts.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO UNPLUG IT WHY DON'T YOU TEST IT FOR RESISTANCE. YOU CAN GET INFO FROM OTHER TREADS
ON HOW TO TEST A TPS. WHAT YEARS IS YOUR FC & IS
IT TURBO & IS IT THREE OR SIX PRONG LEADS ON YOUR TPS?

is it possible to disassemble a TPS, clean it, and put it back together in working order?

I've never tried, but looking at it I think you'd probably end up wrecking it to get it apart.

I have an 89 GTU that has a 6 prong plug. The TPS is located on the Throttle Body.
Mine has two plungers 1) low throttle & 1) wide open throttle.
If you have ever manually accelerated your engine under
the hood, that's where your TPS is. It either has 1 or two plunger
sensors that rride on the Throttle.

Also you say you have turbo, so your TPS will be under
the Inter Cooler

you only need one for checking a TPS its almost better to have an analog tester though

this is because its easier to see if the voltage spikes or not with an analog tester
