input shaft bearing Q, need answer quick
input shaft bearing Q, need answer quick
so i was having my clutch done and decided to have the input shaft bearing replaced, because i had alot of noise in neutral with the clutch all the way up. my mechanic calls me today he pulled the old input shaft bearing and says it's perfectly fine. what else could the sound be?
it's still in the shop right now, i just got back from there, the original input shaft bearing is still absolutely perfect along with the bearing below it, i'm just having him put it back together and i'll swap to a t2 tranny in the next year

More likely the 2 drive gears behind there, the main shaft and countershaft. They tend to wear a lot in NA trannies and whine. I've stripped the teeth off a couple myself, leaving me with nothing but 4th for the limp home.
if it's the tranny itself it can wait, i'm gonna swap to a t2 tranny within the year.that way when this motor finally goes it'll be prepper to drop a t2 motor in. thanks for the help anyway guys

"Input shaft bearing" usually means the bearing INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION to me.
I doubt the mechanic was able to inspect this short of tearing the whole transmission apart?
Does anyone have an easier way to do this?
It really sounds like you're talking about the pilot bearing...or at least what the mechanic is talking about.
Tell him to just replace it.
You can't always look at it and claim it's OK.
It's a very good idea to always replace the pilot bearing and seal whenever you do a clutch job anyways.

did i say something to confuse you guys?? Throw out and pilot, and transmission main drive gear bearing ( input shaft bearing ) was perfect but is being replaced anyway. what i'm asking is what else could the noise be. it's the same symptoms of a input shaft bearing being bad.
