Infinity III?
Heh, yeah that last post has all the right info on the actual car.
In the anime it's driven by one of the "Rotary Brothers" Keisuke and Ryousuke Takahashi... Keisuke drives a CYM FD (mmmmm)... Ryousuke drives the Infini III RX7 (MMMMMM) which is about equivelant to the '88AE in the US.
I think ryousuke's car also has some RE-A kit on it.... I'm not sure... anyway... other funny facts is he "downtunes" his FC to have less horsepower in the anime in order to "balance" it.
But don't laugh that much about it... it is VERY LOOSELY based on facts. There is a real racer who learned to drift and race by delivering tofu for his family... there is a REAL Fujiwara Tofu Shop (not the same place as this racer came from though). And all the facts in the anime are (again, loosely) based on what real Japanese racers have to say. Keiichi had a good deal to do with the anime... he's even in it, when Bunta calls "an old friend" for a favor (if you haven't seen the series I'll not spoil it for you... but I'll say that the thing that happens is ALSO based on truth... but it's stupidly crazy...) and they kind of show the friend at the track... it's Keiichi, and it's his voice on the phone. ;P
That Infini III FC is also the one in Gran Turismo 3.
So yeah, I know a little about the anime.

"Meanwhile, in Japan, on 16 September 1989, the GT-X based Anfini III went on sale..."
Where the hell does this crap come from?! It is not Anfini, Enfini, Efini, Infinity or whatever. It's INFINI. It's not that hard to remember.BTW, Efini is the name 3rd Gen RX-7's were sold under in Japan. Totally different cars.

and calling initial D a "racing sim" is like calling the movie 'pearl harbor' a documentary.

NZ: Regarding the I/E/Anfini, it's because it's not spelt with an english character and there is some debate on how it should be written in english. I believe Mazda Japan spells it with a "A" when not using a epsilon hense why Brian Long did it. (I'll try to find that info) Some use an "E", I guess because the epsilon character is closest to that and some use "I" because that's closest to how many people would pernounce it.
Didn't the Queen cave in and start calling Bejeing "Bejeing" instead of "Peking"?
BBC news seems to.

So I guess you could say it was a base because it was not a convertible or a Turbo... but that is a pretty thin argument.
and the GTU was only a base model in 89-90. In 88 it was the same or better than a GTUs.

Icemark is right, i have both a 91 coupe with option A: 4 piston brakes, rear wiper, lumbar support for seats...(just about every option except leather and a CD player im sure there are a few minor ones that came with option B). I also have a 90 GTU, the GTU had only a few power accesories...the mirrors and sunroof. other than that it was a total stripper car. base brakes, crappy black interior and super crappy seats.
My 88 GTU is the shiz! A turbo ride without the turbo vin, screw the man!!
It is sad how they slutted the name in 89. The sales man in 89 "Oh yeah, this the the GTU baby." Shhhesh
