Safety equipment I assume. Most cars gain 2-300lbs when they come to north america.

The Infini IV was lightened (to 2870 lb.), by removing all the identification, noise dampening material and using lighter parts including lightweight racing style seats.

With a revised suspension (shocks 25% stiffer, springs 10% stiffer and lowered 1") Special Pirelli designed P-Zero tires, ultra lightweight 16 inch BBS wheels and a front strut brace, the handling improved to a skidpad of .91 Gs.
remember they also didn't have any air conditioning, radio/speakers/amps, power windows, fancy cast door panels, spare, etc.

Heck they shaved 20 lbs total just in the wheels.

I think Vosko and Barwick have weighed their S5 TII's stock at 2850 lbs.

S5 TII's aren't convertibles, guys.

It wasn't saftey equipment or most anything else listed in this thread. Infini shaved weight by eliminating the following:

*No sound insulation - There a couple dozen POUNDS of this crap underneath your carpet
*No ABS - the ABS system is heavy, Infini used the regular power assisted brakes with the turbo calipers/rotors and race pads
*No sunroof
*No power steering
*No stereo/speakers/wiring

In addition, the Infini slimmed down its weight with
*Lightweight bucketseats
*Lightweight BBS rims
*Lighter exhaust(I think, I'm 90% sure on this one)

Do math yourself and it all starts to add up!

Steve

P.S. Mark, sorry to burst your bubble, but the infini did come with power windows, and a lightweight aluminum spare/jack! Interior was exactly the same as you would find on a TII in the states, minus the radio, and plus a few goodies like passenger foot brace, driver knee pads, momo steering wheel and the like... A/C was a dealer option, and if some fool wanted it on his Infini, he got it.

P.P.S. By no means is that a complete list of how the infini saved weight. It's just what I could come up with off the top of my head.

I've got an aluminum jack and spare tire. I thought that was normal. The spare tire is pretty slick, if I sell the car I might keep it and hang it on my wall.
