Inconsistant gauge readings.

Ok, i have an 88 'vert with an 88 TII motor in it, the gauge cluster is stock from the 'vert (so NA), and its been working fine for the past year and a half.

Just recently, during a nice long drive (600 miles), i noticed that the oil pressure seemed to be low, about 30 psi on the gauge at 3 - 3.5k RPM. In addition, it seemed to increase about 2 or 3 psi when I let off the throttle (but RPMs didnt change much - coasting down a hill). I checked the oil level, which seemed fine (but the dipstick level never seems to actually indicate the amount of oil in the car), but put 2 qts of oil in it just to see, and the pressure gauge jumped back up to where it should be. another 600 mile trip later (with perfect pressure on the gauge), and I take her out today and the pressure at 3k RPM is registering as back down at 30 psi.

At the same time, the coolant gauge seemed to be acting up too. It was sitting at about 1/6 of the gauge (approx 70*C) whereas its normally at 1/3 (82*C) after a 30 mile drive on the highway.

I find it hard to believe that I burned thru 2 qts of oil in 600 miles of all easy highway driving, so what else could there be? I really can't see how a slightly low oil level could cause low oil pressure unless it was below the pick-up, which it isnt b/c the low level sensor is not going off (I know it works, i test it each oil change). I don't have the random black-box capacitor ground thats supposed to bolt on where the clutch slave is, but I havent had that there since I got the car and never had problems. Could it be the instrument cluster grounding? The sensors?

Thanks!

Smack the cluster when its reading wrong. I had a loose connection on one of the gauge cluster connector and my gauge readings would go crazy sometimes, the coolant would start shooting up and it would read low battery voltage.

I'd rather not be smacking around 20 yr old plastics, but when i pull the dash apart to find a phantom rattle and install the alarm, i'll pay particular attention to the cluster plugs. Anything else?
