Inaccurate stock gas gauge (please help)
Hello guys,
Well I have been having a problem reading my stock gas gauge. When I fill the car up the gauge only goes to 3/4. There has been a few times the gauge went up to 4/4 but quickely after driving it went back to 3/4. The other day I filled up the car and drove to work (about 20mi.) with no boost and it said I used a half a tank! The main problem I'm having with this is I have a hard time telling when I need to fill up agian. I'm using a larger fuel pump/ injectors, could this hae something to do with it? Im pretty stumped here guys, so if anyone has any advice please post!

My gas gauge has been not functional for several years.
Just use your trip meter, reset at fillup. You can find out your fuel economy, multiply by 16 (gallons per tank), and when you get near that number on the trip meter, pull into a fuel station. Sooner if you've been whipping it in town, later if you've been freeway cruising.
Better yet, do as Aaron says.

i'm thinking its in by the fuel pump.. good luck getting into there... rusty small screws, use a sharp point phillips screw driver, put a lot of pressure down and turn counter-clockwise slowly or you'll tear the heads and have to go buy some other stuff.
read this in i think aaron cakes almost complete guide to NA turbo.
good luck!

Up in the FAQ, you will find a link to download your free copy of the Factory Service Manual. In it you'll find diagnostic and replacement procedures for all components of the car. The FSM will show you that the fuel sender is located in the fuel tank, accessible by a small panel just behind the driver rear shock tower, near the jack...

I installed a different cluster and it seemed to read more accuratly than my old cluster did. But after 2 weeks and a tank and a half, it started jumping to empty when I was at half a tank... So I've been ignoring it and making sure when I fill up, I reset the tripometer.

Further to previous posts, the access panel in the floor is the one with wiring going through it. The other one without wiring is to provide access to the fuel filler neck clamp.
Use lots of penetrant on the screws, let it do its thing, and use a manual impact driver on the screws. A regular screwdriver may just round the heads.

The best trick for the screws on the fuel pump cover (on the tank) is to use a sharp knife to clean the debris from the slots of the phillips head screws. Once they are good and clean of dirt, you can easily remove the screws. Has worked for me every time without stripping the heads of the screws.
