im trying to put some thought into my car
I have an '86, I want to do some stuff to it but im not really sure. I don’t want to be able to do 10's down at the track or anything like that but I want it to be able to keep up if I decide to race. Im not sure what I should/shouldn't do. So far im just going to get it painted (I am not even sure what color mabye silver or blue) because the paint is wearing. I also want to be able to look at my car and be proud of what it looks like. So does anyone have an opinion on what I should do? I want something I can drive daily but like I said before I want to be able to push it a little sometimes if I decide to race a stupid rice boy. Any insight would be gladly appreciated.
Thanks a lot

the first thing i would do is to lower it. just get the stance right. and new shocks. and some strut bars. this will make ya FC handle even better! it will make everyday driving fun and feel more sporty. itr also looks meaner with a lil lower stance. and you can chalange the "lil rice boys" to a autox chalange in the turns! then you can work on intake and full exhaust for a lil better flow.
that what i would do. for me lowering my car was my best mod to date!

i dont think i wanna mess with nitrous. i heard that if your caught street driving with someone in the car and a bottle of nitrous it is manslaughter or something. how much does lowering and that stuff cost?

skip the strut bars jwall mentioned and go for the anit-sway bars, the gain is much more prominent and pleasurable and just a little bit more expensive. but lowering is the definate first mod in my book. for wheels and tires in 17" you are probably looking at $900+.. and that's being thrifty. and discount tire will match or beat prices you find at any other tire store. as for lowering springs can be gotten for about $200-300 add about $60-100 for installation

If what you want is to beat on rice boys in a straight line buy a domestic! I won't recommend suspension if you don't have turns in mind. As mentioned before improving the flow of air and exhaust would be possibly the right mod for you.

If you this is your first RX7 then get used to the handling and overall driving capabilities of the car. Spirited driving is fun in a ride you know.
Just a couple of thoughts. Have fun

Some helpful links and info:
So far the best modification to my car was the Bonez high flow cat. from:
www.rx7.com
Pair that with either a *clean* replacement air filter or a cone filter with a cold air box, and you will feel a difference.
You might want to check out some of these sites to learn more about your car and how to do some of the common repairs:
www.aaroncake.net
www.fc3s.org
The 86 RX-7s are fairly light weight, and weight reduction is your friend. Depending on how much $ you have, you might want to switch the ring and pinion gear to a 4.3 ratio for better acceleration. Reducing the overall tire diameter can have the same effect, but it can look a bit silly if taken too far.
There is a lot of debate about what wheel size is best on a non-turbo. A smaller wheel (15 inch) can be very light weight, and the 17s are often heavier if you buy the lower cost ones. My preference is a light weight 16 inch wheel.
Last but not least, fix any broken parts before doing many upgrades. Check your 6 ports, and be aware that on a series 4 their operation depends on exhaust back pressure. Change the oil often, and have a great time with your car!
Best of luck,
cb
P.S. Just to give you an idea, my RX-7 is a heavier 1990 GXL, and it can stick pretty closely with my friend's 2001 V6 Eclipse. Bear in mind that my 6 ports are currently stuck closed, and I've done basically no weight reduction.
