I'm Thinking U-Joint (What Do You Think?)

I'm hearing a 'CLANK' noise comming from under the center consul thing.

Only happens when I engage the clutch in 1st and in Reverse. Doesn't happen everytime, but does happen often.

Sure sounds like it. Jack it up, secure with jack stands and crawl under neath. The front U joint will be a bit difficult to get at but try to move it up and down and sideways. Any give at all and it needs replacement. Do the same for the rear which is easier to get to.

A caution tho, since it does not always "clunk" the hand play may not be very noticable. A "clunk" is a sign of the drive shaft. If you do not know, a blown U joint means you will have to replace the entire drive shaft cuz Mazda choose to design a unit in which a blown U joint could not be replaced. ( been there done that)

However, do a Search on U Joint. Someone in Michigan has a source for replacemnt U joints.
