I'm pretty sure that the rotary engine's exhaust pulses will blow the packing out of a glass pack.

And it will probably sound like crap, or more like a pissed off swarm of bee's going down the highway.

You could try it and tell us what you think of it, but I would just use muffler with baffleing.

On a Non turbo, glass pack mufflers life can often be measured in hours or days.

I would avoid any sort of glass pack on a non-turbo

I had them. They sounded good for a day, then started going downhill. Within 4 days, the packing was completely gone. What a waste.

What about you using a glasspack as a presilencer? I have 3 inch piping from the cat back and just some generic straight through muffler but its loud even at idle and was thinking about using a glasspack as a presilencer.

On TornAcl90RX7 his loudness is probably from them being burnt out.

On olliecup, if a glasspack burns out as a muffler 5ft back from the engine, how long do you think it will last if it is 2 or 3 feet from the engine? maybe an hour or two?

Thats exactly how I had mine. They DO NOT last. If you want a presilencer, get something SS or ceramic packed. If youre on a tight budget, the Dynomax Race Magnum welded and bullet mufflers at jegs are ceramic packed, as are the Hooker Maxflow mufflers. Magnaflows cost a bit more, but are all SS.

My NA had all steel "turbo pack" silencers with glass pack bombs at the back.
Glass will melt in the silencer (ex-cat) location but holds up OK back at the end.
Check out the pictures & sound clip links in my sig below.

My NA has dual glasspacks of some sort... I'm not sure which kind... but it only sounds slightly ricey below 3k... after 3k it sounds like a small airplane.

EDIT: Mine sounds WAY smoother than that guy's. Mine does not cackle or pop.

I'm guessing you are runnung the stock "iron box" exhaust collector.
Mazda designed it to detune & soften the sound.

Headers make loud control more of an issue.
Those pops are visible flames at night..

ok whats the difference between glasspacks and the straight through muffler?

it seems a lot of aftermeket mufflers are straight through design but ppl would love to get there hands on them but when it comes to glasspacks everyone calls rice

also glasspacks where put a lot of times on old hotrods please don't tell me a 64 GTO with a setup of glasspacks on it is rice.

but yes I agree packing won't last long on glasspacks

Apexi makes a decent dual package. I have an RB street header w/ a pre-silencer and N1 duals. Without the baffles that get inserted into the ends of the mufflers my N/A is LOUD!, but with the inserts I can listen to the stereo fine. The whole system is straight through and its designed to hold up to the 13b's high temps.

Sureshot: Yes I'm still using the stock manifold box. I don't have the cash for a header and presilencer just yet.
My exhaust is not stock, however, as I have noticed most of it is welded slipfit piping and I think the stock exhaust on most Japanese cars (in my experience) is bolted together, usually in sections.

Because most of the time you see glass packs (or at least when I see them), they are on like CRX's, and they sound like **** because the engine doesn't have the exhaust to use a muffler that is that big, and flows that much.

But the rotary will keep up with it, just like a V8 will to. When you have the exhaust to use a bigger, better flowing muffler. It sounds better.

But the rotary already sounds like a jetson's car, and this will just amplify that

that is why you buy different size glasspacks

and why is it that everyone says no glasspacks will sound like ***? you can get them with stainless packing for reliability

but let me ask you this
what is the difference between one of those vs the apexi N1?

Glasspack mufflers are OK and will give you a nice raspy sound on a turbo II with a primary cat and downpipe (turbo II) or partial headers on an NA. If you remove the collector & go full headers or straightpipe, it will attract every cop in town.

I believe traditional glasspacks won't work without being destroyed by the higher heat output of a rotary engine.

anyway, this is good stuff to know. Late winter I will be removing the precats and main cat from my n/a and runnning stock mufflers.. I like to do the direct OPPOSITE of ricers.. they get catbacks, I get everything BUT that.

if you want to go full headers (no collector) & a fully open exhaust, Racing Beat is the ONLY way to go for a tollerable noise level & exhaust note. Their full end to end exhaust system comes with a pre-silencer and high flow good muffling mufflers.

It looks, sounds, & performs MUCH!!!! better than OEM. Lots of eye candy on the molded, engraved, & polished exhaust tips as well.
