MA I'm really torn and I need some advice

What's happenin people. I'm in a spot and need some advice. I don't know wether to sell my fc or not. I have all the ads up and everything but now I am having second thoughts what do you guys think, are these cars worth all the work or will I just. Eventually end up punching holes in walls due to the frustrations involved with the car. It runs fine but nothing is to say in 3 weeks something might break.

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Many people get RX-7s without really doing their homework first, and when things start to go south they become overwhelmed and give in. You have to understand that things are going to go wrong, and usually at the worst times. Do you have the time and resources to learn about the car and to work on it yourself? To me that's the greatest reward. There is a certain satisfaction that can be found in fixing things yourself. If you're not the kind of person who enjoys the challenge of diagnosing and fixing things yourself, or your time and resources are limited then maybe this car isn't for you.

Remember though that you've got the cumulative brainpower of the entire RX7Club community at your disposal.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

I don't know if I'd want to rely on any 20+ year old car for my daily transportation because, as you say, lots can and will go wrong. Even in a well-maintained, lower mileage car. I love having mine as a weekend car and I have a different car for DD.

Don't get me wrong, these cars can be tremendously reliable and are probably more reliable that nearly any other car from that time period. I daily drove an FC from 1995 to 2005 and it worked out pretty well. But that was a pretty long time ago already. It's just hard to fight age in a car, especially when it's being subjected to the rigors of daily driving.

I would first have to ask are you a car enthusiest? most people are buy cars like this beacuse there different but the people are not really into automobiles so therefore when the 20yr+ old car breaks down it then becomes the worst pos ever. Many people like im describing do not know the back ground of the choosen car or have much knowledge about it. eventually they will sell it because its either a broke down pos or there just to old or moving on as these have been excuses i have heard. many people that are not enthusiests neglet there car beacuse they feel thats not the best place to put there money at.
I think a someone that appreciates cars and could car less how much money and time is poured into there hobby should be the only people to own a type of car like we have. I believe that these cars should not be your daily driver beacuse there old and there going to break down period.......If you think in your head sometimes " i can't wait to graduate college or get a real job so i can buy my bmw, evo, gtr, ect ect... then just get rid of the car now so it dont get trashed. Also ask yourself...why do you own this car? whats your motive? do you have somewere to keep it when its broke? is it winter time and its broke? Do you have enough money to make your car happy and yourself happy? Ive spent alot of money on my car and drove it for 20miles last summer if that...and the bills for it just keep stackin

If you like FCs, this is still a great time to own one. The supply may be getting a little thinner (especially in the Northeast) but you can still find nice ones out there. Mazda still stocks nearly all the parts you need to keep them going. As mentioned above, there's great technical support available on this site and elsewhere on the net to help you diagnose problems and address maintenance. And they're not worth very much money yet so they're affordable to buy and fairly cheap to replace when your current one wears out.

I plan to keep mine until it wears out.

if you really like your car, keep it. selling mine crossed my mind a few times, but that was just a slight weakness which i realized was dumb.

plus they are awesome to drive.

Wow dude you really love your car!
After 5 years I love RX7's more than when I started. You will get frustrated and you will have bloody knuckles more times than you can count, but in the end it is worth it.

ok....I think you are breathing in the exhaust fumes a little too much there...

Ive been into rx7s since 2001 and its a pretty ride (the journey and the cars )

Learning about rotaries is fascinating and fixing them is arduous if you dont know what you are doing, but learning by taking each step by step is pretty rewarding.

I even did my senior project on the rotary engine. 12 pages in 10 font in courier LOL, learned a lot from that experience

Keep it... It already sounds like you're having regrets. Learn as much as possible about it. Become a "Guru".

I would never sell my fc, if i became homeless at least I would have something to sleep in and get me around to work or whatever. But also I love my FC, blood, sweet and alot of money went into my car, with a tear here and there (when the job was done.)

However I feel that if an fc owner wants to get a daily driver, get a honda, **** I have one for that. I look at owning a car like anything else in life, get what you want and nothing less. If you dont love your fc and if you dont think you will be able to do for it what someone else can, sell it to someone who will. And go get a honda or whatever to drive around. I dont want to sound mean, but some cars belong to those that will care for it, others whatever, the rx7 is one of those cars. Im not saying spend thousands on it, leave it stock if you like, but restore it so that your 20 year old car doesnt look or drive like a twenty year old car. But remember your 20 yr old car can smash on a 2 yr old porshe if you do it right

I think the first thing you should consider is :

Can your wallet support it ?

Most frustration came from "lack of funds", some might said "Im mad because this pos is not worth the money". See? Its all about money.

you gotta remember, no matter how much you love the FC, its old and it will have problems.

When problems come, MONEY will be your first issue. when a part breaks, what would you do? You will find and buy a replacement, right ? and those little "here and there" all adds up. and most people just "never" saw this before they made their purchase and at the end they get mad and trash everything.

Got my FC last June and I already expect to invest a "huge" amount of money into it. My parents said Im nucking futs. so ? Im well prepared.

So if you're not ready, especially if you're going to get married soon (I seen it, not for FC, a dude with Evo has to sell his car cuz he has to get married ... sucker) ... you should really sell your car right now.

Just a little hint,

- a "good, high quality complete repaint, meaning it will strip all interior/exterior, sand everything down to bare metal and repaint" will cost 4-5 grand. and im going to do this no later than late next year.
- a decent rebuild with your engine, assume your core is rebuild-able, gasket set ALONE will cost 1.2 K. and thats assume you know and will do the rebuild yourself.

etc etc ...

Nothing is to say that you won't be squashed by a meteorite tomorrow either.
Or that your new Prius won't kill you for that matter.

Seems to me there are only two valid approaches.
Either you buy a new car, pay the higher price/insurance and have a reasonable expectation that it will work as advertised or you buy used, pay less (and don't eat the initial depreciation) but expect higher (and potentially more inconvenient) maintenance costs.

Take your pick.
