I'm finally legal!
Seven years ago i bought an automatic 2+2 for my girlfriend. I bought it from a second rate used car dealer in Springfield. My girlfriend never titled it and signed it over to her mom. She never did anything with it either. I took it back with the messed up, out dated title and no bill of sale. then I moved to Memphis.
Countless trips to the DMV in both Missouri and Tennessee. Several inspections from state patrolmen, certified letters back and forth from Nashville, and everyone telling me I needed something else.
Today, I said "screw it" and forged a bill of sale from the now long since closed dealership. made another trip to the DMV and crossed my fingers.
Now I am the proud owner of a license plate actually registered to the car. for the last few years I would take the plate from one of my other cars. It made me really nervous when i did. Now I can speed and not worry about going to jail
. Just tickets.

Seriously,
I have run into similar BS with rule following at the DMV. Once I had a car title that had been signed by the original owner.
The subsequent owner had the car for about 3 months then sold it to me. He also signed the title, but signed it in the place that was reserved for Dealer Only. Two trips to the office and no one could help me. They wanted me to make the subsequent owner register the car, pay transfer taxes and fees, then have him sell it to me, only to have me also pay transfer taxes and fees.
I later found that there was a title bill of sale correction form that had to be filled out by the original owner. All the information required about the original owner was available on the front of the title.
The form didn't need to be notarized...

jack, what state are you in, b/c alabama has the EXACT same process, and makes getting cars with f'd up titles pretty easy, as long as they have the messed up title, however getting a title is a process i'd rather fork 125 dollars out for someone else to do... so worth it.
