The car is new to me, two months old. The Idle has never been right! it stalls alot, the rpm drop quick and it stalls so fast sometimes it stalls out when i cluch for a stoplight! I have an 89 and know that its the only one with a idle speed control unit (ISCU) has any one delt with one of these befor? BTW can i pull off that Air pump and get some power, i heard it would make the car smell like eggs!

 

The bare Wankel engine has very little low end torque, so maintaining idle speed takes up about half of the plumbing you see on the motor. Getting all the solenoids and controls to work can be a rewarding challenge and will give a rock solid 750 RPM idle. Many owners just pull all that stuff, and crank up the idle to 1000-1200 RPM where there is enough torque to handle varying idle loads.

 

First you complain about idle problems, then you want to pull the airpump off???????????

Fix the problem! Don't go down this path of removing stuff unless you absolutely don't need it. You'll just end up pissed off that you never fixed your idle problem, you'll have a dead blocked cat, and no six port/VDI actuation.. And don't ask me if you need it or not, research the mod you want to do , find out everything you can, then decide if it's worth it.

You're on the wrong track. The air pump is for emissions control; it has nothing to do with idle speed.

 

I Understand that the air pump has nothing to do with Idle speed, i have this problem w/ the idle speed i am trying to work out, but i can multi task and work on the perforance end as well. That is the air pump question

The air pump's easy, but did you look the other threads in this section. This is the forth time I've posted this info today! Go read this thread.
The idle speed control unit you refer to is called the bypass air control (BAC) valve, and all FC's have one. Check to see if it's plugged in first. If you don't know where it is, download NA EFI chapter of the factory service manual from www.fc3s.org and read all about it.
You may just have a vac leak. Check that no hoses have split or fallen off. I'm sure other will suggest more things to check.

 

i have the exact problem you have.
i was replacing my stock Blow off Valve with a Greddy Type S and had to disconnect some wires to the Soleniod Valve (BAC) and 1 of the wire broke off right @ the connector and now my RX back fire bad as well as almost stalls all the time. untill i increased the idle speed to about 800rpm
