Idle speed and idle mixture questions

First a quick update, I purchased an '87 TII and have done the ATF treatment (actually used MMO) and started the engine for the first time a couple of days ago. It ran very well but would not idle below 1800rpm. Today I did some troubleshooting and discovered that the wax thermo rod was not extending so I disconnected the spring and wired the arm open. The car now idles as it should.

Does anyone know if it is possible to replace this part without removing the manifold?? Is this a common failure?

Second, the workshop manual describes setting the idle mixture by adjusting the variable resistor. From the pictures I figure that I should be able to find the resistor but I swear that I don't have one. I found a 3 pin connector that is in the approximate location but nothing is attached to it. This is a green connector that is about 4" below the front coner of the intercooler on the drivers side. Is this the correct location??

Please guide me in the right direction! Anyone have a spare variable resistor gathering dust?

I have not driven the car yet as I am refurbishing the brakes and need to get something for an exhaust system. The idle is quite smooth but it gets rough when held at about 1500 to 2500 rpm. Seems like it is missing or the mixture may be off. Any ideas?

Thanks for the great information that you guys and gals always provide.

Did some more reading and studying the wiring diagrams and found the variable resistor. I was looking in the totally wrong area! The connector that I had previously located is a check connector (anyone know what is is used to check?).

To adjust the variable resistor I need to connect a jumper to the 'initial set coupler'. This appears to be the two pin green connector (beside the 6 pin green connector) located by the leading coil pack.

Can someone confirm this as being the correct one?

Thanks.

I believe the variable resistor is filled with some kind of glue or putty that has to be removed to get the the screw. You are correct about where the initial set coupler is.

Thanks for the confirmation.
Now back to the master cylinder replacement!
