hmmm, we might need more info but, I believe if you start the car up in gear it starts the accelerated warmup process. This causes the car to startup and rev to 3k and then idle at I believe around 1k for a bit till it warms up and idles at 750. It should not be revving back and forth during the warm up process. Hopefully someone will agree with me on this. I'm somewhat knew so I'm not positive.

Your TPS is in need of adjustment. Pure and simple, follow this link and all will be fixed. You may also need to adjust the idle speed screw.

On an 87 NA I only have a throttle senor that has 3 wires on it. How do you adjust that?

O.K. man, start the car up & let it warm up till it idles down...get some alligator clips for the meter leads, and a piece of fairly stiff wiring (paper clip, maybe)...ground the black lead to the stud sticking out of the throttle body (or any good ground, really) via the alligator clip...stick the stiff wire in the green/ red stripe wire terminal on the TPS connector (on a '88, anyway), make sure it's in there good for a good electrical connection, and attach the red (pos) meter lead to it, via another alligator clip (the clips are just so you can free your hands- make life easier)...with the engine idling, you should be getting 1 volt DC, plus/ minus .1 volt or so. turn the screw on the throttle linkage (might have a plastic "cap" on it) above the TPS area to adjust the output voltage while you're looking at the meter. This is a rough adjustment, but it'll get you in the ballpark...I've found more accuracy using the "test light" setup (with a couple of meters instead of the lights), but the voltage test will at least show you how far off you are to begin with. Good luck...

I think that is normal behavior for an engine started in neutral. Part of the warm up process.

TPS adjustment did not fix the start up fluctuation for me. It only seemed to affect the idle after it was warmed up. RRTEC, are you saying that TPS adjustment will change the 3K to 1K on startup?

No i wasn't addressing your problem....air n water.... The car is supposed to go to 3k then 1k, then to 750rpms as a warmup procedure...BUT it isn't supposed to fuctuate like say 3k to 2.k to 2.7k to 3k to 1k to 1.5k to 1k so on so forth....just 3 steps
3k for about 10 seconds
1k for about 30-120 seconds
750 rpm for the rest of the drive....
