Idle problem leads to car not starting--ideas?
Background: 1987 TII, 170k kilometers, turbo rebuilt last year, new silicon hoses (installed by previous owner), Mazda installed aftermarket exhaust.
I had an idle problem, with the likely culprit being a vac leak somewhere. Also, there is a strong smell of fuel when driving and the car is going thru fuel like a beast. The previous owner installed some sort of metal contraption that looks like it connects the fuel lines (hoses)--he said that it's supposed to prevent flooding.
In any event, being the smart guy I am, I figure the idle problem may be related to the BAC or fuel mixture. I played around with the idle at the BAC (which didn't seem to do anything) and with the air/fuel mixture, which suddenly spiked the rpms to between 2500-3000 rpms. This concerned me a bit so I shut the car off.
When I tried to start it again, it would just turn-over, but not start.
I guess I screwed it up. What I need to know is if I damaged something and what I should do to remedy this. Also, regarding the BAC/air screw adjuster--does turning the screw clockwise reduce or increase the flow. And on the variable resistor, the indicator shows R (right) and L (left)--does turning the screw R (right) increase or decrease the idle mixture.
TIA for your help...

Em, Im an idiot--variable resistor indicator (R)=rich, (L)=lean....hehe.
I still don't know about the air adjust screw, though. Does turning the screw clockwise reduce or increase flow?
Thanks.

I think I'm addicted
could your engine be flooded? (don't trust your last owner =D) anyways...either try flooring the gas pedal on startup or do that long unflooding procedure...
when i mean floor it, i mean just floor it, not pumping it... says so in the RX-7 owner's manual =) worked for me before ^_^

Your flooded. Pull the under hood EGI fuse then turn it over for about 5 seconds. Put it back and start it up. The sudden spike in rpm is most likely due to a vacuum leak. Check the vac lines around the BAC you must have accidently pulled one off while you fiddiling around with it.
Flooring it only unfloods S5, dont do it to a S4.

The metal contraption is probably this: http://www.mazdatrix.com/c-bleed.htm
If you suspect the variable resistor has been compromised......just disconnect its plug. It will default to a given value. But there is a procedure in the online fsm that lets you check the variable resistor out. Do that first.
