idle problem on a 90
Hey guys, after doing the water trick a month ago on my friend's 90 GXL. The idle had been bad since. Here is what it does. When the car is warm, it would not idle at 750. The car would keep bouncing harshly between 650-850. Thats how it idles ever since I did the water engine cleaning trick. What do you guys think is the propblem? We tried to reset the ECU, but no help. What else should I try to do?

vosko, when you say to check for vacuum leaks, how does one go about doing that? Do I just look at the hoses to see if they are dry, brittle and craking? Is there a different method, more methodical way to check for it?

I too have a 90, and it ended up being a TPS problem. Read your ECU codes. If its a 12 & 18 are both the TPS (full & narrow throttle). Does your "Check Engine" light come on? If so, exactly when? At idle?
You can reply here or PM me... But I'm new here, and don't know what that is...just hear everyone else say that...ha, ha, I assume is Private message, but don't know about that yet).

My '91 is doin' the same thing...
I'm working on it now, looking at the TPS set-up among other things. Never a 'check engine' light though.
Keep me posted on the results, thanks!
lbjimmy: What did you do to fix the problem that you were having? Was it an erratic idle?

My TPS problem: --'90 n/a GTU-- It was very eratic, especially in the morning (cold). My engine light would come on at idle, but when I gave it gas, it was gone. It was like this for about 1 1/2 years. Then I learned about codes, and then the TPS. I had pretty much become a TPS expert after about 9 months of research. I finally bought a TPS, and that immediately fixed the problem... the engine light was gone. But then about 1 month later, it was back. I plugged in my old TPS, and the engine light turned off. So installed my old TPS, but then the engine light went on again. I spent all day looking at it (really). Thinking what it could be. Then I figured it out. Here goes... and get this because i have never seen anyone mention this. (yes I tried all types of TPS adjusments, and mothing worked... I don't need to be schooled on this..)
Here goes:
As soon as you install the TPS, that spring loaded tip is shoved in... that's how it fits in right. Well it turns out that my TPS was shoved in too far, so I just loosened the two visible mounting screws, got a screwdriver and hammer, and hit the TPS mounting bracket (not the TPS itself) so it moved a bit (towards the passenger side). This allowed the TPS sensor[(s)89-90)] to extend further out. As soon as I hit it over a bit, the check engine light went off, and was able to adjust it properly.
Note that instead of hitting it, I believe you are really supposed to rotate that "throttle thing" that moves the TPS sensor in and out.
Hope this makes some sense.
