The setting of the tps does not really set the idle of the car. But it does need to be set right.

1. Start your car up and drive it til it gets fully hot.

2. Pop the hood and look at the connector that goes to the tps. One of the wires on the connector WILL be green with a red stripe.

3. Put your meters negative lead on a good ground like the battery negative post. Now shove the positive lead of the meter in the back side of the plug where the green wire with the red stripe is. Do not take the plug apart. Everything should still be connected up.

4. With the engine still running and the meter connected as in step three, look and see what the meter reads. If it does not read one volt, adjust the tps screw until the meter reads one volt. Done.

5, Flip the throttle a few times and let it come to rest. The meter should still read one volt plus or minus .05. Like 1.05 or .95volts.

A. The idle should be set now. Install a jumper wire in the green check connector that is near the front coil assy. Its green with just two sockets. Its called a initial set coupler.

B. If the car was idling while you did this jumpering, the idle speed probably dropped down a bit. On a 86 car the idle speed is set with a screw on top of the dynamic chamber. Tuning it clockwise slows it down, anti clockwise increases the speed.

C. Set the speed as close to 750 rpm as possible. Then remove the initial set coupler's jumper.

D. Most likely the above procedure did not work to your satisfaction. Most likely in my opinion......because the car is a bunch of years old and has been monkey fucked with over the years and everything that can effect idle has been screwed up.

E. It takes patience to overcome step D above.

If the car's idle is still screwed up after trying the post above, start the car and let it get fully up to running temp. Now pull the plug off the BAC. Its on the left side of the engine. The idle should have changed if the idle was below 750 rpm initially. If the idle is above 750 before pulling the plug......then the idle won't change at all.

So if the idle did not drop any after pulling the plug, and the initial speed was below 750, then the Bac itself is suspect/bad. Or the output to the BAc is bad. That is the most likely scenario.

my idle is at about 850, and I have my bac disconnected, although I have no accesssories on my engine excpet the alt, p/s, air pump, and a/c removed, I've heard that when you open the intake and exhaust on a rotary, it makes the idle speed faster, is this correct? my car seems to be running great, and pulls a 16-17 vac....should I bump it down to 750?

Not really. If your happy with 850, leave it there. Just don't have the car running at 1100 or 1200 and call that IDLE. It ain't. That's a runaway train. And somewhere around that high a rpm, 1100 to 1200, the ECU will on it's own advance the timing, and that will play with your mind.

I was just trying to say that the bac will try to hold the idle at approx 750 if you put a load on the engine, like the a/c, the headlight turned on and the brake lights turned on. It's capable of trying to hold the idle to 750 and not letting it drop lower, but it does not have the capability to effect idle over 750. Some thing like that. I'm talking series four. Series five similar.

I think your talking about just sitting there in neutral and the car is idling, then you put the shifter in gear and then put it back in neutral. And the idle has changed from eleven something to eight fifty. Several people on this forum have mentioned similar things. The neutral switch seems to play a part with the idle mixture. I know not just what or why. There's no detailed information that I know of on how the ECU works. There is a RELATIONSHIP CHART in the 88 manual that shows that the neutral switch does effect fuel delivery. Got me.
