Identify this motor

Looking at this motor and I'm wondering whether it came from an S4 or S5. I guess I'm just have a hard time figuring it out cause its almost down to bare block.

Thanks

ok i will check the rotors when i get the chance, but how can i distinguish between S4 and S5 rotors by looking through the exhaust?

also that LIM wold have to be S4?correct? to match the S4 irons?

Thanks

depending on how carboned they are, you should be able to see if the tubs of the rotors are cast finish or machined.

the LIM you have there is s4

im sorry to jump like this but i want to make sure of what my motor is as well and youve got a thread started..i searched in the FAQ and its lead me to believe this is a s5 motor but I took it out of my s4. The reason im confused is I have one TPS, s4 turbo and manifold but i have a knock sensor over my spark plugs on the rear housing and i read somewhere about the oil line going over the top of the front housing makes is a s5. Alot of things have been deleted like the emissions and the OMP. Again sorry to jump in

no, its just painted.

most of the items on that block points to s4, BUT it looks like a knock sensor on the rear rotor housing, so it could be a mixed parts motor as well

Engine 1: S4 NA, has S5 housings so it has been rebuilt

Engine 2: S4 turbo, can't see the rear housing but if it has the knock sensor hole then it is probably a rebuild.

No, from what i can see it has S4 irons, 1 early S4 housing (it is stamped) and 1 S5 housing, S4 waterpump neck, S5 primary fuel rail, S4 injectors, ect. Basically it's a mutt but will probably work best in an S4. You could have either rotors but I would expect they are S4.

Note: the engine is odd with 1 S4 and 1 S5 housing. I would not have built an engine that way because IIRC the S4 spark plug holes are in a slightly different spot than the S5. As well, S4 and S5 housings have been known to wear at different rates.
