Ideas and help

Just looking for some ideas and help on getting this thing up and going.

I just picked up a white 87 SE from my friend. My friends and I are trying to get it up and running. It has been sitting for a year or so at my friends and before that we dont know how long it was sitting or why it wouldnt turn over.

This past weekend we worked on it. New battery, fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, and wires. We drained the gas tank and put in some more fuel. Also checked the oil and then changed it.

We tried to start it up but it wouldnt turn over. The starter sits there spinning and you can see the engine rotate and all the belts and pullys move fine. We checked the firing order a few times and from a few different places. Everytime it was the same and we had it the same on our car.

Next we tried to push start it. My friend pushed the car down the road with his truck. We would get up to 20mph or so and I would dump the clutch while in 1st and the car would try to start up. For a few seconds it is as if you had just stalled it. Then it would die.

We tried again this time I gave it some gas and it still died.

Next time I just popped the clutch and then shifted to neutral. Same result.

All the times we tried push starting it smoke was coming out of the exhaust. Not a lot but almost how the smoke comes out a a gun barrel after you shoot it.

We know that the plugs are getting a spark. the 2 coils are giving off a good spark. Then we held the boot off of the plug and you can see the spark gap to the plug. We checked on all of the plugs and they all had a blue park.

We removed the intake housing from the elbow on the manifold. The jets open up when you step on the gas and close when you let off. There was no blockage that we could see.

The fuel is getting past the filter no problem. we disconnected the fuel line as close to the engine that we could and it definetly gets gas.

After doing all of that we decided to remove the plugs and then try to start the car and see if any fluid is in the actual engine. When we removed the trailing plugs they had a light brown residew on them. I am not sure exactly what that is or if it is normal. When we tried to start the car again each of the holes has a misty or smoke like gas coming out of them. we did that a few times and then put the plugs back in.

The car still doesnt start. Who has any other ideas. I assume the is some sort of compression because the stuff that was coming out with no plugs in it. I am not a rotary person and I have given it my all. Any help is appreciated.

I read about the ATF trick after various people told me about it. I gave it a shot and the engine sounded better when trying to turn it over but still no dice. After putting it back to gether from the ATF trick and then trying to start it smoke would start to come from the exhaust but the engine never cranked up. Just wondering if anybody else has any ideas.

The plugs did smell of fuel when I removed them.

Have you tried just unflooding it??

it IS probably flooded

i would keep doing the push-start trick

easy way to check compression - remove the leading spark plugs, (you DID get the NGKBUR7EQs and BUR9EQs, right?), remove the EGI fuse under the hood, and turn the car over for a bit. if you hear a steady chug like a train, you have good compression. if it sounds like a galloping horse, you may have a problem.

after sitting for so long it may have lost some of its compression.. you just need to get it turning over and it will do the work

mine sat for over a year, and it just WOULDNT START, and when it did, it was rough and would usually stall

new plugs + better coil grounds for the spark has made my run smooth, and always starts up no problem now that it has been out and about daily.

if it is flooded, i would try doing the push-start trick, with the EGI fuse removed. that will push the excess fuel out the exhaust port..

then after doing that for a short distance, put the fuse back in, and keep trying until it starts up.

I think you should try 2nd gear when push starting it not 1st.

so im gonna stick with 1st gear then..

worked for me when i stalled 2x going down a hill.. lol that was fun kinda..

I stalled out when I had a MASSIVE vac leak but I did not use 1st I used 2nd and she fired right up.

i dont think it matters.. unless your going down a steep steep hill then maybe you should use a higher gear.. lol..

Yeah I was doint about 40 MPH so I did not want to use 1st I just slipped the clutch then put the clutch pedal in again and let the car run in neutran then thifted into 4th and kept driving.
