I think my water pump is leaking

so my car slowley looses coolant and it is definatly not burning it. Under my water pump there is a crusty white streak on the engine, which looks like the path of water, it gets bigger and crustier every time.. just making sure if coolant does this, if so I'll be changing my water pump gasket this weekend.

Yes, that is coolant escaping from your weep hole and drying up. It is not just the gasket you must change.

That could be very serious. I think mines doing that to. Maybe time for engine swap.

Yeh, the Weep Hole is part of the water pump. It is basically a vent for the shaft. There is a seal around the shaft to keep water from getting out and onto your belts. If that seal starts to go bad, the water comes out through the weep hole. You can't replace just the seal usually (without some equiptment) so you just replace the water pump.

They arent usually that expensive, and a new water pump is a good thing to have on a car. This does not mean "Engine Swap". I'd guess replacing the pump is around a two hour job for most people who have never done it before.

OR! The gasket could just be going bad, but it is most likely (to me) the weep hole.

Look at checking all your coolant hoses, replacing your thermostat, checking your radiator cap, and flushing your coolant while you are in there. New gaskets/RTV red all around. ESPECIALLY check the heater hose under the oil filter! That one tends to go bad. Clean all the corrosion (if any) and apply a good sealing compound before reassembly. Check your clutch fan while you're in there anyway. All that stuff doesnt take that much extra time.

Oh yes, and make sure your plastic end caps on the radiator are not brittle (look for hairline cracks) (I've had my share of those exploding). And your coolant system should be good to go!

I was joking. I remember when people use to answer every problem with the Rotary engines with that answer.

already replaced my rad caps, coolant hoses are fine, flushed my coolant 2 weeks ago, but now it has been replaced with mostley water since I've been refilling it. and oh yah, my clutch fan seems to spin a little too freeley, like I can stop it and spin it in the other direction while the car is on!, oh well I have extra ones.
and I'll check the rest of the stuff when I do the waterpump swap. thanks!
