Unhappy I smell fuel =(

When I start my car I smell quite a bit of fuel. Then after driving for about 10 min, the smell goes away but I think I still get a faint smell of it. From the receipts I have from the previous owner, a pulsation damper was purchased in July. What else could be emitting the smell of fuel ? The fuel filter looks a bit worn, could that be it ? or do I just have crapped injectors and/or o-rings.

Any idea how much it would cost to get this checked out and fixed ?

Thanks

Just scan around under your hood for leaks/bad hoses/etc. If you've got compressed air, spray it under the manifold right after starting/getting that big smell then stopping the engine and see if any gas flies out. Could be bad injector o-rings, bad hoses, who knows. Better to check it all and find out

Pull off the upper intake and jump the yellow connector at the passenger shock tower. Turn the ignition to "on " position (not starting) to turn on the fuel pump. That will pressurize the system for you to check for leaks.
It's almost impossible to check with it on. If you've never taken it off before, it's not too difficult but be warned about the coolant hose to the throttle body.
Best thing to do is cut that **** off and route a longer hose or better yet disable the cold start and block it off. Make sure you cover the top of the lower intake to keep anything from falling in. I've heard a few people dropping bolts, nuts etc. Just don't rush into anything because you'll do more harm than good.

That is not "better". Some of us like engines that start and idle.

Considering how seldom the UIM needs to come off, trading the inconvenience of that dealing with that hose every now and then for the hassle of an engine that'll never idle cold seems pretty daft. There are smarter ways to make the hose easier to remove and replace. You even said one of them.

fc3seeker, tracing and repairing any fuel leak is going to require removal of the UIM, so you should take the chance to do the other things that you can't normally get to. Pull the injectors and send them off for testing and cleaning. Replace the injector o-rings and grommets, and inspect all of the fuel and vacuum hoses for signs of wear. Replace any that look suspect (or just do them all if you want). Replace all the stock squeeze-type hose clamps with screw ones. If the fuel filter looks old it should be replaced too.

Chances are that all that maintenance will fix the fuel leak, but you should always pressure test the fuel system before UIM replacement anyway. If the leak is still there is shouldn't be hard to spot.

The smell is kinda in the middle, I mean it doesn't reak of fuel but its not faint either. You can get a good whiff of it.
