Question EBC Red Stuff vs. Hawk HP+ and oil for track day use

I was wondering if anyone has ever compared EBC Red Stuff and Hawk HP+ pads knows the pros and cons of running Red Stuff vs. HP+ brake pads on track days. I also want to know if there is any problems associated with running 20W-50 in a rotary when I take it to the race track (1991 n/a 5 spd).

Thanks

What problems would you expect with 20W50 on the track? Thicker oil is probably better when you're running hot temps. My advice to you is to check your oil level after each session on the track. You should use up a lot. I went through more than a liter on a lapping day when I was out for ~6 of 8 possible hours. Also if you don't have a baffle, make sure you are at full or maybe even slightly above.

Tips from my limited experience: Make sure your cooling system is running 100% and that you have lots of pad. I highly recommend regular DOT3 Ford spec brake fluid which has a dry point of 550 degrees and is dirt cheap. If you aren't going to switch the fluid be sure that it is fresh. After a run let your brakes and engine cool down slowly (do a cool down run).

Those pads are great for autocrossing. However, if you are road racing, then they are totally inadequate, and you will need to upgrade to Hawk Blue or EBC Yellowstuff or Bluestuff. Other brands are also good. See the Race Car Tech forum:

20w50 should work just fine.

Depends what the track is like. For some tracks those pads would be fine.

Thanks for the advice; I actually just changed my brake fluid to the Ford DOT 3. I wasn't expecting any problems with the oil, but I have limited experience with rotaries, so I wanted to be sure. About the pads, it's for a driving school at the Spokane track (I'll be in the novice category), so I don't need super aggressive pads, just something better than street pads. The link should give me the info I need.

Too much variables...

If you're in the novice class, you should be fine.

I have zero experience on that particular track, so I cannot comment on how hard the track is on brakes.&nbsp Certain tracks are murder on brakes, and other tracks use very little braking.

If you're running upgrade brake pads and fresh brake fluid, you should be fine.

The NA doesn't allow greater speeds versus a turbo model, so that should keep the braking requirements a bit easier in your case.

Personally, I don't care too much for the Hawk HP+ pads.&nbsp The Hawk Blues are much too aggressive for most "driver's schools" unless you're on helluva driver.&nbsp I have zero experience with the EBC stuff, but I know the entry level EBC Greens are too sedate for a track event - the EBC reds should be okay in your case.&nbsp I like the Performance Friction stuff, but these things are pricy!
