I searched through 500 results!!!

ok i started a thread about my 65 sprite that i put a motor from a 91 convertable...my question was exactly how do i get rid of the air pump and make my engine function normaly....i do not want a check engine light i don't need a massive hp increase (car weighs 1600 lbs) all i want is for it to be cleaner looking funtional and not kick a check engine light....i understand how to make the ports work with a electric pump what i don't understand is how i actually run the air hose...do i run it to the stock electric valve so the ecu can open it? do i run a rpm switch? can i ditch the big silver air thing that pump used to run into? and what else can i loose to make it look cleaner? i did a seach since everyone flamed my other post saying its in the archives and all i found was "get rid of the airpump" or "airpump = smogpump loose it" i would apreciate a solid answer to this question its been driving me crazy!!!

YOu can not get rid of the air pump (without replacing it with something else) and have the engine work correctly

The air pump is on the left side of the engine bay eazy E, it is the only accessorie with a pully on the left side of the engine.

If you removed it, your ACV will no longer do its job. You may notice a few things

1) Popping in your exhaust when you let off on the throttle
2)Really really shitty emissions (don't matter, you live in alberta, they dont give a ****)
3)Your cat will defenitly pass away, and im not talking about the one in your living room.

Removing the air pump doesnt throw a code IMO, not that I remember. If anything, It MAY throw off the exhaust heat warning lamp on the idiot light cluster, but you can disconnect that sensor to get rid of it.

EazyE, if you removed something that siezed on the right side of the bay, it must have been your air conditioning. Power steering you would notice for sure.
The air pump doesn't exactly sease to my knowledge. Mine is as old as my car, and it still worked perfectly fine. I also have never seen any threads on air pumps siezing.

On another note, if you take apart the air pump, its very much like a rotor within a housing. The rotor is actually a cyclinder with 3 sort of apex seals that come out of it. The seals scrape the inner wall of the housing and expand and contract within the cyclinder to collect pockets of air.

I just thought it was odd to see a rotary type function in a device, and to still have it working perfectly after 17 years, wheras the engines usually do not

well i guess im the first to have this happen... yes it "was" on the left side of the engine... and it happened when i roosted on the car when it wasnt quite warm enough to be doing so... i felt a slight loss in power for a second but regained as engine warmed... when i got home i took a close look under the hood to find that one of my belts had snapped (not worn) snapped.... not knowing what this was i imidiatly panicked lol, phoned a buddy of mine who knows alot more then me about cars.... he told me that it was my air pump and then said that having one actually restricts my horse power (slightly of course nothing noticable really) but having one that wasnt working was worse.... so i then took it to his place and he removed it and bipassed it alltogether....from what i hear if you dont have one you actually gain hp.... i know it seized because i couldnt turn it by hand.... one thing i noticed also is that my car is noticably louder now... especially for a stock exhaust, im betting that when i get my RB turbo back it will actually be quieter... anyone else have anything to say about this?

I have never seen an air pump seized, and on a 89-91 non turbo, there will be a HP loss without it.

I suppose if someone way over tightend the belts or the car sat for a long long time, the bearings in the air pump could fail.

Mr Myself, I've got a similar idea going on with my 64 TR4A. But I plan on going all out and getting a ported FD engine. The idea of 1500 pound car with 400+ ponies (That's 4X stock hp) makes me grin in an evil sort of way. Unfortunately I'm far away from getting to work on that because the body is desperately in need of some TLC.
