I screwed up

Okay, I really stepped in it this time.
My '87TII is finally ready for a replacement engine (240,000 miles) and I purchased one from eBay.
My dumass, knowing better, didn't check and now I have an S5 engine coming that I need to put into my S4.
Can someone tell me what else I will need to do besides swapping this engine in?

Thanks!

Umm the s5 OMP and the s4 omp are different, one is mechanical the other is electric..

Swap all your manifolds (your oem manifolds from your turbo) onto the new engine. And just block off the omp.

would this be easier if I put in an S5 ECU?

No, you'd have to do a lot more wiring.

If you don't want to change the front cover, you'll have to block the OMP and run premix.

You would have to swap the whole car's electrical system.... Just use your stock parts on that block. You have very little choice here.

Dude just swap out the TB, injectors, and the needed sensors, block off the rest and call it a day. You came out ontop. The s5 engine and Turbo are primo. Lighter rotors, better manifold design on the turbo. Just swap out the injectors and Throttle body...

get a microtech lt8's and go premix if you don't wanna swap out the omp. Problem solved.

that sounds a bit better. how much premix? ...and what kind?

oh..one more problem, I have emission test to pass every two years. just completed one last fall, so i'm okay until 2008.

Man, this is probably the best mistake you ever made.
Look at it this way:
You're running a newer engine, with an extra 15 HP out of the box. Oh, and a better turbo. and from what I understand (I may be wrong) the engine is just generally better to work with. Generalopinion says that you will want a new ECU if you want to make any more power, anyway.

Will stock cats with the setup you're talking about still let you pass emissions?

I'd put my money on yes. but I don't have any way of knowing for sure

^^ Seriously dude, its not that hard. while you are taking the engine out of the car, before you remove the starter, set a breaker bar with a socket on it on the crank bolt, set it up on the frame, and turn the engine over till its loose. That bolt can be a bitch fromhell to get out, but really, there are ways around it. thats the hardest part... Just get new gaskets (which are cheap for those) and replace the front seal, and front cover/ water pump housing gasket (would be a good idea to replace the water pump anyways on an used motor) and run the lines. Keep the s5 intake manifold and swap the Throttle body over. If the turbo is usefull, then the turbo is also a better design. (individual runner manifold)
Less than a days worth of work, and you will be happier. That is unless you want to spend money on a bottle of 2-stroke oil to put in every time you put gas in. Your choice dude, but I would do it the right way.

They are not talking about a "10 day rebuild". So don't get shitty.

Since your old engine will be out, and the new engine will be sitting there next to it, you just strip down the S5 motor, replace the manifolds, harness, and front cover with OMP from the S4 motor and reinstall onto the S5 motor. This should only add a few hours to your project, unless you suck.

Less time if you get a block off kit and go emissions free.
-I understand that you have to get tested, but with a good cat, and throwing the airpump on to help pass (plumb to cat split air pipe) you should be golden. That will save you even more time.

Have fun.

run premix for a while if you don't want to swap the covers. Change everything else to s4 cept for the turbo. Run 2-cycle oil in you gas tank at about 1oz to a gallon. You can change the front covers and all that eventually when you want to. It's just a bit harder since the engine is in the car.

Seriously, block the OMP. Most people do that because its better for the rotors since you ALWAYS have just the right amount of oil mixed with your gas. And you dont have to check your engine oil between fill ups.
I blocked the OMP 7 years ago, never had any problems, I run 1/100 premix.

And Electric OMP are shitty and not reliable. Beleive me.

As for the rest, use the s5 block with your S4 manifolds and such but use the S5 turbo.

Easiest and most reliable/cost effective way of doing things. But you are looking at 400$ worth of gaskets.
