I ordered my RX-8 today

Yep, I did it. I am third on the list. laid down the deposit and told him what model I wanted and three color choices. The dealer gave me a poster, 2 sided one it the 5 o'clock shot and the other is 11 o'clock.
god they are sexxy cars.
I asked him if there was a discount for paying cash but he said no. If I didn't want to pay full price, some one else would.
anyway I am getting the metalic grafite color, base model (lighter)

price is all I was concerned with. dealer said between $28,000 and 30,000. to be released in feb 2003. I was kinda bummed about that, I didn't want to wait another full year. I thought it was to be in august. but they pushed it back. I didn't worry about options bc I told him I wanted the lightest they offered.
a/c, pwr str, leather all standard. 50/50 weight. 24 mpg and 280 hp form an n/a. I don't know if they are going to offer a turbo or not. I like n/a's
dealer says they only expect 1200 to 1400 to be imported the first year
they are supposed to be much lighter than the 2nd gens but he couldn't give an exact figure.
I know they are going to have metalic graphite (option #1 for me), black (option #2) and yellow (option #3) red, green, silver, grey, just about any color you want. the interior trim is color matched to the paint. there are inserts in the seats, and the dash and door panels.n La mans inspired suspension and I think 14" brake rotors with 8 piston calipers but I might be wrong. the dealer couldn't conferm for sure this is the brake setup. alloy wheel standard (duh) and a completly graphite body! ( per daler info)
I ahve had a woody all day about this. I have decided I am going to pay cash instead of a load so I have to work harder to get a higher comision. my supervisor says he likes that I have a goal now cause I pulled right out of the week long slump I have been in. I took the poster the dealer gave me and put it right infront of my desk. If things start to get frustrating I just stop and look at it for a minute to regain my composer. I am trying for a $1000 a week commision, I will live off of just my hourly and put everything else including bonuses into a money market account. I should have almost all of it by 2003 and then cash in my stocks and have the rest with some left over for an intake and exhaust. that is the plan. now I need to see if life will allow it.
He is to e-mail me when more info becomes available so I will keep you guys posted

Great plan.
Hope you can do well off of the hourly and not be tempted to dip into your funding every once in a while.

Thanks alot for the details...

How much did you deposit?
Is the 280hp documented somewhere or was it just a geusstimate from the dealer?

Thanks.

RX-8 will only have 240-250hp in inital US production trim. The 280hp figure was for the 11,000rpm motor in the Evolve concept car. and THAT was a bench dyno#, (Gross HP) not as installed in the car.

so why didn't that 11k one get used? Or is it the same, just with a different redline painted on?

I think it used carbon/ceramic apex seals that are WAY TO EXPENSIVE for a production motor. and did not have to breathe through US emissions control equipment, but otherwise it (the Evolve motor) is basically the same as the production motor

Is it True Mazda are puting the Rotary engine in the Mx5?

One of the Mazda reps at the Los Angeles auto show suggested there might be a limited production run of Miata's with the Rex 8 type rotary. However, I also read from an interview with the US Mazda President that they want to firmly launch the RX8 until ANY other Rotary project is introduced, including a re-introduction of the RX7 3rd Gen.

Funny that I saw this post. I'm planning on going to my local Mazda dealer tomorrow and get on the "list" also.

Yep

RX-8 first and then rotary miata (the miata clubs are buzzing something feirce).

Did you say you wanted the base or higher performance model rx8 ??

The production model looks has all the lines in the right places

A little inspiration for you:

Check out the "Cosmo 21" post in General Auto to see what a Rennisis Miata might end up being...I personally love this retro concept; copy one particular car instead of a hodgepodge of cars like Americans have been doing.

I still think that the car looks like the front end is trying to say something, the smiling mouth front valance looks kinda fucked up for some reason, its like one of those talking ships from "theodore tugboat" or something, Mazda's high point of styling was the FD, also I would be weary of the HP numbers advertised by Mazda, the miata hp numbers were greatly exagerated, I wish they would make a first gen again with a 13b-rew, that would be totally kickass, I wonder what kinda of interest that would generate, an updated fb with irs, projector front lamps, and fully illuminated rear light panel, that would be just to cool..Max
