I need your help in paying this car
I call on you RX-7 Club one more time in seeing what you guys think about this car. After I passed up the 1200 dollar 87 t2 because I was being stupid I haven't slept a night without thinking about that car. So I found a nice little project rx-7 it looks like. I don't like the red interior but they said it was mint so I guess that helps
I don't think the guy knows what he is talking about, but then again I don't know much about RX-7's myself. I would like to fix it up and keep it for a little but maybe sell it so I would let to know would it be a good investment. How much do you guys think it would take to fix it up and all? Let me know thanks. http://www.lookoutdrift.com/forums/i...showtopic=7231

I meant for the title to be "I Need Your Help In Buying This Car." I don't need you money, I have my own. I just need to know if it's a good deal. I looked up the spec on this car and seeing what it came with, and it seems that this a base model. it's not a Sport Pkg. because no spoilers, its not a GXL because no rear wipers, and its not a luxury because no sunroof. So is a base model that looks like that, witha engine knock worth $500 dollars?
I'm sorry I didn't know that. Here I'll give you all the info I got in a nutshell. The car has 205k miles original owner. The engine knocks, it has a busted windshield, it needs new brakes and master cylinder. You can't see any rust but it hasn't been washed in a while. Driver side fender is dented kind of bad. "he told me some more stuff about the car, mostly about the engine.
Apparently, its a "J" type car, meaning it was built in Japan. It is the highest end model of the FC at the time. The engine is different in that it uses 4 spark plugs. I was under the impression 2 rotor rotary engines only used 2 spark plugs. He also noted that its a "twin rotorary" I dont know what that means exactly, but I want it. " "IT RUNS!! NO leaks and sounds great!!! we ran it for over 20 minutes. there is a hose on the passenger side by the firewall that needs to be replaced. i cant remember exactly what its for, but when the engine heats up to normal temps, the engine rattles a bit, kinda like a minor vacuum leak. The master cylinder needs to be replaced. if you push the brake pedal too hard it causes the calipers to lock, they will retract, but it takes a few seconds and a few pumps of the brake pedal." As for pictures give me a couple mins.

"all" rotaries got 4 spark plugs. I guess he called it a twin rotary because it has two rotors? (anyway, that quite usual too). I dont know about the price though since i live in Norway. But i payed 5000 USD for a car that was in almost the exact same shape as that one
If the car has been parked for a while you should look and maybe change/rebuild most of the brake system. Find prices for a new fender, brakes and find out whats wrong with the engine...
Red interior isnt cool/sweet looking but yea, mint condition helps

That is defintely a base model. Some people refer to two rotors as twin rotors. It was the lowest of the models produced as the Turbo II was the top model. IIRC all RX-7's were built in Japan so that guy is kinda wacky. $500 seems reasonable given the condition

I think I found the brake system, fender, and windshield local so that shouldn't be a problem or to much. My main thing is the engine. I'm sure it will need a rebuild, I'm just wondering is all that going to cost me more then the car is worth?
I dunno man... all depends on how much.. if it was me, i wouldnt buy this car unless it was under 500 dollars.. but im a cheapskate.
Its a S4 base model..
The hose you describe needing replacement, that may be the brake booster vacume line. that would explain the crappy brakes.
The interior is red... and it almost looks as though the driver seat is ripped... cant tell very well by the picture... but point being its red..
J type? never heard of that before... sounds like BS.. ALL stock RX7s are twin rotor, and they ALL had 4 spark plugs, leading and trailing per rotor.
looks like it needs new tires.. its 4 lug (thats part of the base model part) no spoiler... paint dosnt look too great, does that matter?
Im assuming you mean the Brake master cylinder needs replacing... they're pretty pricey for a new one (i think when i had to replace mine, the auto parts store wanted $260 brand new) recyclers are the way to go for that, but its a PITA to replace.
needs new windshield.
Its actually the lowest end model rx7... Now, maybe the seller dosnt know what hes talking about... but.. the description sounds very suspect. My bet is the seller is trying to rip you off. 205k miles... stock motor?
If you had a chance on the t2... and now your lookin at a base model... id at least hold out for awhile longer.
Im very curious as to how much he wants. please reply with the price. Also, any pics of the engine bay?

That’s the same thing I was thinking. He wants $500 for it, this guy is posting for a older guy who was just going to donate the car, they were going to give him $500 for the car so that’s what he is asking. That's the only pictures I got, because that’s all the guy posted. I really wish a had of got the t2 because it was really clean just needed a rebuild but for 1200 you couldn't beat it. It was the clean t2 I have seen ever. I was bullshitting and it got away.
Seems to me the only thing this car has going for it is that it runs. Personally, I think you will spend more money fixing the damage than you would spend to buy a much nicer one. I'd pass on it and get a nicer one for $1000-1500.
You are buying trouble with that car. Especially if it needs a new engine.
I have a car for sale, and no I am not trying to sell it to you, I am in OK, not east coast. But, I will pm you with the details and what I am going to try and get for it, and that will give you an idea of what to look for price/quality wise.

Base in shitty condition= leave it be.... Not worth your time..
Windshield- $199
Fender- $45
Tune up- $200 (you doing the labor jus the parts are $200)
Master CYL- $100-200
Tires for those god aweful rims- $300
So you will have roughly $1500 invested including purchase price just to be able to drive it around. Now you still need paint, 5 lug swap, brakes, ect.. the list goes on.

It may look like a POS but if it's relatively rust-free and clean, and you can get it for less than $500, it would be a perfect start. Finding a model without a sunroof can be tough and remember, the base model is really just a sport model without the good brakes/suspension/aero stuff (which can all be added). The sport was the predecessor to the '88 GTU, which was the predecessor to the GTUs. Those are the most sought after N/A models. Get this thing, clean it up, get a rebuild installed without p/s, a/c or any accessories, do a 5-lug swap, BBS vert wheels, racing beat suspension package and you will get another 7 back on the road that's very light, very reliable and fun as hell to drive, good luck!
Man this is hard. Half the people say don't get it, it's a POS and is going to cost more money then it worth to fix it up, and the other half is saying get it for 200 dollars lesser like if I was to fix it up it would cost 200 dollars lesser then it's worth or something. It's a good looking are besides the damage I would'nt mind have a rx-7 but if it's not worth it to fix it then it's not worth it to me. I guess I'll wait for the next one.
i kinda had the same problem with the brakes and clutch. i just replaced my master cylinder.. it cost me $45.. my clutch slave cylinder was $16. fenders are about 50 bux depending where you go. and a mast rebuild costs you about $1000 if you do the rebuild (which i HIGHLY dont recommend) windshield is going to cost ME about $100 to be replaced at my house. umm i already have five lug i converted which cost me about 150 for the spindles and all.i still had to buy brake lines which cost me 13 bux each from the dealership and a new clutch hose cuz mine was toast that cost me about 30 bux... keep those prices in mind. since your probably goin to spend as much if not more than i am.. I STILL NEED TO REPLACE MY HOSES soo yea.. it IS a 20 yr old car, expect to replace a lot of things. if your not ready.. do us all a favor and move on.
