Speedo Cable
One end of the cable is directly behind (actually in front of) the center of your speedo. It is a little hard to get to.
The other end is fastened to the bottom of your transmission, sort of the way a garden hose fastens.
I strongly suggest you get a shop manual for your car. Try EBay.
Also a basic course in auto mechanics at your local adult education center would be very valuable, AND fun!

lippy guys eh? Well i just put a new instrument cluster in. And you have to take off quite a bit of **** to get in behind that Cluster, but if you have bumped the car...just check it out and see if the wires are still connected. Or! the Cluster might have F***** up so check those. hit me back
Has this always said zero or has it only just happened recently. My speedo drive gear in the gearbox broke and the speedo didn't work.
This is a little plastic gear inside the side of the gearbox that connects to the speedo cable and turns with the rear wheels. (I'm not sure what they call it in the states)
This may cause the gearbox oil to drip out so be prepared for that.
Look under the car and you will see the speedo cable going to one side near the back of the gearbox. Jack the car up on this side and use car stands (you might be able to get to it on the ground if you're really skinny). Turn the fitting at the end of the cable and twist off the fitting (works like a thread). use a spanner and take the drive gear out and look at it. If it is broken some of the teeth will be damaged. Get a new one and replace.
DO NOT DRIVE WITHOUT REPLACING THIS GEAR (You can put it back in place even if it is broken), AND YOU NEED TO FILL THE GEARBOX WITH OIL IF ANY DRAINS OUT.
If you are really unsure, don't pull the dash apart, and take it down to a workshop (any old one you trust will do) or get a mate and get them to check the gear. Pulling the dash apart is a last resort.
In my opinion it wouldn't cost that much to get a garage to do it. But if the speedo drive gear is OK then don't let them loose on the dash.
