Ok so i live in mass and i dont think im going to be able to pass emissions.
The previous owner removed the ac, ps and air pump and created many block off plates. Now i really am not sure what systems are part of the emmissions but im pretty sure he removed all of them. ANd he put a dp and presilencer in so no cat. I got that part covered im going to borrow my buddys old TII exaust system, the ony thing missing is going to be that precat on the dp.
What else do i need to pass emissions??? Does removing the air pump effect my emmissions at all??
Please help i dont want to get a fake sticker

 

Removing the air pump will cause you to fail more than likely.

 

Sorry but I'd have to say get a "fake sticker". To put all the emissions stuff back on and to get it to work properly wont be an easy task. The air pump pumps air into the cat to complete whatever process it goes. It also keeps the cat from clogging up.

 

make friends with a local shop that does inspections...give them some cash to look the other way

umm ok so either i put everything back on somehow or i go to get a fake sticker, or i try putting the old exaust system back and and try anyway and see what happens or i dont know F****** EMMISSIONS!!

well if anyone from around cali needs to pass emissions i know theres a place in covina called honda sometin and theyll look the other way lol my older uncle used to street race a el camino and went there for smogging but there pricey 150 for them to look the other way

 

I don't think it's neccesary to replace the ACV. I would however keep the EGR on. I have the EGR on but I've removed the ACV/airpump/cat/pre cat. I'm trying to pass emissions over my break this week so tommorow I'm putting on the airpump. Then I'm going to run a line from the airpump to the lower portion of the split air pipe. Nuts to the ACV. I think this should be good enough for me to pass even without alcohol but I'll report back.

 

I have a question. How long do the cheap High flow cats last I heard some storys of them clogging quickily w/the airpump on. I have a 3 inch exhaust all the way back to my racing beat mufflers I was wondering if I got a 3 inch cat welded on should I have it taken off afterwords or leave it on? can I have mounts welded on the ends of the cat and exhaust so I can interchange the parts?

 

why don't you just get a flange for the cat and some flanges for the turbo back exhuast. Get a muffler shop to cut out a section of pipe where the cat will go. Then have them weld on the flanges to the pipe. Buy 2 gaskets and you can swap back and forth between a cat and test pipe whenever you want.

 

mines been on for 6 months or so with no airpump. mine has flanges so I can unbolt it out if I want.

ya, no emitions here!, you could also try going to pepboyz or somthing and look for this emitions stuff, most places have it, it makes your car pass emitions, the smog pump is a must i would think.......

 

I would say the cat is the most important part for emissions. I'm in NYC, my '88 stock convertible failed with all the smog stuff, HC was 1.7, limit is 1.2. So I changed plugs, wires, oil and air fliters, ran some of that pass emissions stuff and Ultra 94 (supposely burns cleaner) this got it down to 1.5. Finally realized cats were shot (rattling around), replaced them this brought it down to 0.13! So a new cat for me cleaned it up about 90%.

Higher octane gas does not burn cleaner. For emissions, the best gas you can run is the lowest octane you can find.

 

What I've heard of people doing, who need cats for 1 day a year, is to use an electric air pump from another car (corvette is a popular choice) and pump the air directly into the cat (that they bolt on) bypassing the ACV (that's not there anyways)

That way you don't have to deal with reattaching all the emissions equipment, and taking it off afterwards.

I was even considering trying an electric air pump, the kind you use for filling your tires, if I could find one that pumped enough air.

These details are prior to selling my T2. This is in California. I had the full RB turbo back exhaust, ITG racing intake, mod ECU, etc..etc.. I had to smog my car inorder to sell it. I reinstalled the stock intake, smog pump, and install a HI-FLOW 3" cat (s.s. w/ mandrel s.s. piping and flanges) professionally installed. The cat looked very trick.

I had it smogged. It passed like a new car. The HC's were close to 0. The two, most important components, are the airpump and the cat. You will definately pass.

 

Depends on what you mean by clean-my problem was HC which sulfur has a big part in, Ultra 94 has the least amount of sulfur so it does help HC readings.

yo as usual u never ask me huh! lol. i think i can get phorn to hook me up with an inspection sticker, a real one. for 60 bucks though.

Put the cat on and try to pass with that. My bro took his airpump off on his V8 Chevy and passed just fine. I heard the precat doesnt do much, so if you have the main cat, you should be fine. Also, iv heard good things from those fule additives that are suppose to "help you pass" i had a friend with an old 80's carburated dodge V8 and he failed the test, put a can of that emmisions pass stuff in, came back and passed.

 

just put the airpump on and run a line to the split airpipe into the cat. I'm actually putting back on my airpump today to pass emissions in a couple of days
