I came, I saw , I kicked its ***.

Im sorry but I have to kinda let it out.
I was worried about my emissions test. I got the notice about 1.5 years ago in the mail saying that my car was due for emissions. In CT where I am you need to pass emissions otherwise you cannot re-register your car.
I got the notice for emissions after I had removed everything emissions related on my 87 T2. I was worried and put it off. Well i got a second notice about a month ago saying that I need to pass emissions otherwise I couldnt re-register my car on Sept 19 th. I was like Opps. Forgot all about it. So i did some searching. I know someone local that does welding so I was going to go the universal cat route. But after thinking about it I declined as the person is here and there. Mainly being somewhat undependable. So for about 50 bucks extra I paid for a direct fit cat for like 103.00 shipped. I was surprised after the cheapest I had seen was like 150 plus. So I ordered it and about 4 days later it got here. I spent all day putting my pre cat and the new cat on. Ghetto rigged the air pump with only one bracket. ehhehe( ran some high temp 3/4 in hose into a 1/2 in adaptor right onto the air pump inlet on the cat. Drove around looking for the closest place. On the way I leaned out the car to about -2 through -4 up untill 5k . It was running ok . not so smooth but the R-tek I have runs the car extremely rich. Got there and waited not knowing if I would be taken as the cut off is 5 pm.

Finally the guy scheduled ahead didnt show up in time. They took me. Praying to god that it passes. The guy stalled it out 2 times trying to get it on the dyno. After showing him the fuel cut it was on there. They had trouble reading the Vin(I has the defroster vents out and just before the test I threw them back in, needless to say they were a bit mangled). It passed the gas cap test. 1 down one more test to go. Finally after about 3 minutes of the 3k test the guy pulls it out of the shop. I was nervous. He didnt say anything. His partner was waiting for the print out. I asked how did she do?. He said "it passed". I wondered by how much. A friend of mine had a simular ghetto rigged setup and just passed. I looked at the sheet

93 hc's out of 385
0 co's out of 1.23
568 NOx out of 2692

I was put aside when I saw the numbers after seeing how people on the boards always get high Hc's. out of all this I would say invest in a new cat. Put it on, Pass the test and if you want take it right back off and save it. The new cat and ir pump is the way to go.

PS me being in a rush to install this and get it tested I neglected to check the box it was shipped in. I checked it for the website addy only to find 2 brand new gaskests for the pipes and one for the air tube. Go figuire.

for some reason people don't like investing in a cat or they consider $100 too much to pay.

I know people that would rather slip the test guy $250 than spend $60-100 on a cat and some tubing and put the air pump back on.

Glad you passed Mark... you showed everyone how simple it really is.

I now officially love where I live...they will never do emissions testing because everyone is too poor to afford decent running cars.

So you passed with just cats and an air pump? Did you still have the rats nest?

mine passed with a Bonez HF cat as well as the original car it was put on, both had streetports.

the rats nest hardly helps emissions, if anything it would hinder emissions even more by dumping the charcoal canister vapors and crankcase vapors into the engine as well. if you don't have visual then not having the rats nest shouldn't be a problem but it should only be attempted if you know what you are doing.

Bingo!

Worked for me also. My pristine easy-switch cat is still waiting in the garage for the next test this October.

Nope no rats nest.

Just air pump, cat and the pre cat/dp that came with the car. I spent like a few hours putting it all back on. and to tell you the truth. It was worth it as passing the test on the first try.

Just a background on the car so people know where im comming from

rebuild with street port
emissions removed
r-tek 1.7 with 720's on secondary
Cone air filter with 3 inch pipe
BNR stage 2 turbo
SAFC2
Greddy FMIC
Greddy Extreme exhaust
Secondary TB plates removed
Bac removed
Walbro rewired to 14v

Basically you should be able to pass with a new cat and air pump. Unless something is really wrong with your car. In which case you should be fixing it first. I did not change the plugs, wires or air filter , or use any alcohal . Just normal 91. I did tune the safc down into negitive numbers. Although this isnt a instant pass. This could have a ill effect as if you run too lean you could have NOX i believe if my memory serves me correctly. I was well under that reading. Just some food for thought.
