Not a problem at all. it's a little tough doing parking maneuvers, but just use 2 hands and you're good. If you place a ton of value on palming the wheel in parking lots, you'll hate it, if you like being able to change your spark plugs and having an uncluttered engine bay, you'll love it .

FCs can weigh anywhere from 2700-3000+ lbs, depending on year and trim level.

I like the fact that my 7 does not have PS. it's a little harder turning when the car isn't moving but other than that it's awesome

and no it's not like turning a car with PS when the car is off, in that situation your fighting the PS pump a little so its not quite as bad as that. when your moving it turns easy.

Actually, the question should be, did it have power steering, and was it removed? If it is a power steering rack, without the power steering pump, then it is what everyone above is saying. If it is a manual steering rack, it will obviously be a little bit easier.

The only place you will notice the lack of power steering is when you're parallel parking.
Many of us actually remove the power steering.
Without power steering, you feel the road more and the car doesn't tend to want to follow ruts and other deformities in the road.

Go ahead and test drive it.

Worst comes to worst, you say no to the seller.

Or you can buy the power steering setup off of someone who has removed it form his car.

Note: S4 GXLs have speed sensing power steering and all others Power Steering models, S4 and S5 included have engine speed sensing power steering...

That is, it uses either the vehicle's speedometer or the tach signal to sense whether you're on a highway and actually cuts the power steering at speed. So technically, power steering si doing nothing while you're moving anyhow.

Absolutely not. Try it and see.

Power steering is better for parallel parking and other very slow parking lot maneuvering, while manual steering has better road feel and you will never need to replace the $1,000 power steering pump.

+1

A ghetto-rigged power steering rack does not work as well as an actual manual rack.

Manual racks are great for feel, and when you have stickier tires your arms will get a decent workout on the track. They're only for the manliest of men.

people remove it in street cars thinking they are benefitting from freed up horsepower. I personally dislike it.

People also pull their air condition. I prefer creature comforts.

My first FC had a manual rack, it was ok, it was almost as easy as p/s at speed, but a bit of a pain for tight spaces, however not enough for me to consider converting to P/S.

Then I got my current FC w/ power steering, I prefer it, but mainly for the quicker ratio rack. The power (properly running) works great for AutoX, I would imagine (as I have only ridden and never driven...) on a road course that the additional road feel of a manual rack would be preferable.

I've replaced the rack, and rebuilt the pump, but if it goes again I might try a properly de-powered rack.

Also of note...the S4 (86-88) featured a vehicle speed sensing P/S system which works better than the S5 (89-91) engine speed sensing system.

lack of PS is only noticable at low speeds with wide front tires and a small steering wheel.

i have 225 width up front with a slightly smaller than stock nardi wheel and a girl was able to drive my non-ps car without problem.

I purposely bought the '88 base model because of the manual steering. Road feel is great but on the track it really gave me an arm workout. The instructor couldn't figure out why my arms always looked flexed. I told him it was manual steering. Ah ha, he said, that explains it.

Manual rack FTMFW! I love how i can feel what my car is doing and have a better ratio than PS. Im not strong by any means but i can man handle my steering wheel no problem even in tight spots.

I have had both... Personally I prefer having PS; mainly because of the amount of canyon/touge racing I do. Sporadic/random oversteer moments are not as scary when you have PS, it's almost like cheating to have PS on the more technical canyons. Plus for drifting PS is super awesome too have.

If you do opt for PS, S4 and S5 TII PS is the best. Non-turbo S5 PS really blows.

For clarification:

S5 NA's with the exception of the GTUs (not GTU, the GTUs is a separate model) have engine speed sensing power steering

S4's, S5 Turbo's and S5 GTUs had the vehicle speed sensing powering steering .

There is a way to swap the S5 Turbo Power steering into an S5 NA correct? (with full functionality of speed sensitive power steering. )

engine speed power steering really blows, i feel like its the same no matter what.

I think the FC power steering rack (or at least, the good ones not the cheap s5 n/a ones) is so good that you can hardly tell a difference in handling from the manual rack once you get up to speed

yea.....it's just annoying to do. You need the pump and the lines and the ps computer, if i'm not mistaken.

Can't you also take that whole assembly from an S4 too?

They're a dime a dozen at the scrapper.

I agree. I started with a real manual rack and then got a S4 GTU ps rack. I thought if I sneezed to hard the wheel would do a 360. I then moved to beltless ps because I hated the ps, and then got the rack depowered.

Sure a manual rack is harder to turn when stopped, but after you do it for awhile you build muscles and then its no longer a problem. And you will have beefy arm muscles.

My pec's hurt after a full day HPDE session on beltless PS.

Was very fun though.
