Hylomar
Hylomar
This quote comes from the Hylomar web page. But is it true?
"Hylomar Universal Blue will never harden which offers benefits in assembly and dissassembly. As Hylomar does not cure it offers an unlimited assembly time. This is particularly useful when assembling large components."
We started putting the S5T2 engine back together ......again, but I won't be able to work on it today and I was wondering if it is actually safe to let the Hylomar on the coolant seals set for a couple of days until we can resume the assembly.
thanks

Yep, unlike Silicone, which dries in an hour, Hylomar never dries. You can put a thin layer on (That's all you need), and come back couple hours or days later, then you put the gasket on and it will still seal.
but if you're talking about this product

it's really the Hylomar M, NOT the original Universal Blue Formula. This thing is based on Acetone, it's much stickier and you need to work fast or else it's gonna stick everything it sees. it will not dry, just very sticky after a while, you can thin it out with Acetone(obviously), so it's better to have a bottle of acetone around + a small paint brush (to thin it out)
Good thing about Hylomar is it's Really easy to clean (if you messed up), just use Acetone and wipe it.

Wow, this thread just reminds me of how old I am. My last engine that I built for my REPU was back in '88 and I was using Vaseline from when they taught us in Mazda school in the '70's...
Amen for progress...

We still use vaseline on various parts but not to hold the coolant seals in.
One more question. I was watching a video that the rx7club made back in the fall of 2005. It is on YouTube. On the video they use a brush on glue to seal between the housings and the irons. They brushed it on the edge between the out coolant seal and the edge of the housing, same thing with the inner.
Do you guys recommend this procedure? I know Aaron Cake didn't use it in his video and they didn't use it on the Atkins video either.

I used a whole bunch of vasline too, just that some areas I use Hylomar.

I pulled my motor apart after about 4 years and the blue Hylomar was still tacky, I got some on my shirt.
I don't think I have any of it left though... Is Vaseline ok for the entire motor?

I don't use vaseline at all after a disaster with a crushed coolant seal. Now just a little wheel bearing grease to hold stuff in place, and lube with regular engine oil. Helps the engine start up easier and is less smokey.
I worked as a Mazda technician from 1972 - 1982 and Vaseline was stocked in the parts dept like any other misc item. Although we got away from building engines so much from '75 on up, we still used it whenever we did one with no ill effects that I can remember.
So, yes, it was ok.

I only found that Vaseline makes the outer coolant seals stretch. So if it is an engine that will be apart a lot then you will need to cut and silicone the ends back together to reuse them. Hylomar does not do that to the seals. Love the stuff!
just recently did my 1st re-assembly using this Hylomar that came from Atkins.
Welcome to Hylomar
i found it to dry too fast making spreading it very frustrating.
anyone know what the solvent/thinner base is?
this Hylomar seems immune to both odorless mineral spirits and nail polish remover.
If I had known how it is to work w/this stuff, I would have gotten it in the spray can. Hang all the seals up, spray'm all and be done with it.

Just a semi-relevant addition - you should always have acetone. Not only is it a good minimum-residue cleaner, it's the solvent for superglue.
You can buy it in the makeup section, it's nail remover (superglue used to hold artificial nails on).
Sometimes it's cheaper at hardware stores.
