It has no logo on the side and no "AN" stamped on it like the Earl's fittings. I find that my set of mechanix gloves does the job for this. As far as the blue fitting backing out... holy crap that was one of the most frustrating things when I first started doing AN lines. I finally figured out that, depending on the fitting, you often need to tighten the red socket until it almost completely bottoms. Then the blue cutter/nipple will seat in there securely and not back out when you try and screw it in.
Ah, your fittings are the cutter style. I've found those problematic in any size, more so in the small sizes. The cutter wants to push the hose out of the socket while the nipple doesn't have enough grip to keep it in. I personally prefer the Russel fittings that are cutterless as the nipple helps to draw the hose into the socket.

Looks like you may also have some no-name fittings. I've seen a few of those before and thrown them in the trash. The machining is very poor, often the nipple/cutter does not sit in the center of the socket, and the flare side often hs grooves. Poor quality fittings really complicate things during assembly.

I am going to try this again maybe tomorrow. My hand is still cramped from the struggles of two days ago when I made my most recent attempt... I feel like I am recovering from injuries from a violent 4 hour jerkoff session.

I gave it another shot and it went way better (got it on the second try). This time I used the jeweler's flathead first to get most of the braids in there, and then I really pushed hard on it as I turned in and that finally got it started. Then I let the red socket bottom out (used a wrench to tighten it fully) before I installed it into the blue cutter.

I didn't leave the tape on. I tried that once and that just made it harder to fit the hose in.
