Get yourself a Haines manual (Mazdatrix is one place that has them), that's a good place to start for a beginner

I would go drop $20 on a hayne's manual bro. That'll cover pretty much all of the basics.

Haynes manual sucks *****.

Download the FSM (factory service manual.) For free.

If your 7 is 86-88, you want:

http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1986_1988/

If it's 89-91, you want:

http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1989_1991/

In the future, when you post a question, be sure to mention the year of your car, and if it is turbocharged or not - it helps the people who try to answer your questions.

Umm...why do the Haynes manuals suck? I've always liked them. And a lot of the diagrams and stuff in the RX-7 one at least are straight out of the FSM.

My opinion is if you're just starting out go with the Haynes, when you've mastered it go with the FSM...

They don't suck. They're fine for most basic maintenance. FSM is overkill for the simpler things, say, an oil change.

There's very little wrong with the Haynes manual. There are a few inaccuracies (mostly in the wiring diagrams), but they certainly don't "suck nuts". There are many people who have rebuilt engines with only the Haynes manual to guide them, and for almost everything wrong with the car it has procedures to repair...HOWEVER, troubleshooting is a skill that cannot be found in a book.

considering almost all the illustrations in the haynes manual are straight out of the FSM, and 99% of the troubleshooting checks, you can only flame the haynes if you don't even have the technical aptitude to understand the english language j/k. BTW, do you really need a step-by-step to drain & flush a cooling system???

The photos in the Haynes manual are far superior to most of the diagrams in the FSM. The FSM has much more technical info, but the Haynes has much more info on how to actually do the work required. Both manuals should be used, and neither one is a replacement for the other.

And how often do you see people post about cooling problems caused by air in the system from not following the correct procedure for flushing the cooling system? All the time...

Remove oil bolt on oil pan.. Make sure there is a bucket under oil pan. Drain oil. put bolt back. Put oil in motor. unscrew filter, screw new one on. Start motor....

The FSM also has inaccurate and mis-leading pictures of the vacuum lines diagram.

Haynes is a great manual for anyone.

Haynes is like $20 and the FSM is free. Can't really go wrong with that price. Haynes does have better pics, but FSM has more info. The two together are a perfect balance.
