How too - Replacing the front carpet

Did a search, went through 3 pages of results and nothing. So, starting this thread.

I have a replacement molded carpet for my Vert. Removing the old on, no problem with a nice sharp razor knife. The issue it installing the replacement.

I've been told the only way to install the replacement would require removing the entire front dash. I understand that a key issue is the steering wheel column support mounted to the center hump. Can't the mounting bolts for the support be removed and the center bracket simply pried up a bit to allow sliding in the replacement carpet?

Anybody that has experience in this, please share your experience. It would be great if a how too could be posted or linked to.

Otherwise, Happy New Year to all.

I am pretty certain you have to remove the dash. I pulled the carpet off my parts car and the only way I could figure out to do it was to pull the dash off completely. Honestly, though, I think it would be easier and less risky to just pull the dash than to try to find a way to work around it.

You don't need to remove the dash. Just cheat and cut the carpet where it passes under the shifter area of the dash and squeeze push the carpet ends up there with a piece of wood. The secure it with strong double stick tape.

remove the dash..ive done this before and its not really that hard. if your gonna do it, do it right. ive never had much luck with aftermarket carpet sets as they dont always fit very well, but if your gonna go that route make sure its already molded to the fc floor pan.

ive pulled many dashs, none in a vert though. if they are the same as a non-vert, its fairly stright forward and really doesnt take to long to do. id reccomend pulling it and doing it right

the dashes are easy to pull and yes the carpet does go under the dash on the tranny hump where your heatercore assembly is if you want to do it right that is what i would do but if you are really careful you can do the old cut and tuck

Actually the vert is slightly easier, because you can move around easier with the top down.

Let us know how it looks when you are done, and where did you get the carpet. I need new for my vert, but haven't found a source.

Can't you just unbolt dash supports and pull it up enough to get the carpet out? I'll be doing this when I dynamat my car in a couple months.

I got my replacement out of a crunched S4 with 67,000 miles on it. Looks like the car was garaged kept as near nil fadeing.

It's looking like the dash is coming out as I'm a picky sob about installations. But, will give it a try to jiggle some room once the mounting bolts are out before pulling the dash completely and report any success.

Keep the comments coming, if for no other reason, so future searchers can find this conversation.

Sometimes the tranny tunnel will heat up enough to almost glue the carpet to the sound deadening. If that happens it's either remove the dash or cut the carpet.

I'd take the dash out, it's not difficult at all. A dash R&R and carpet R&R will only take someone who knows what they are doing a few hours.

If all posts were bumped... none of the important ones would get seen.

I'd LOVE to see a write-up on removing the dash. I always view it as a daunting task. I have a parts car.. maybe I should give it a try. Maybe I'll make a write-up.

there is a write up for removing the dash. I will try and find it. BTW, maybe I'm lazy/sucky mechanic, but dealing with the carpet was horrible, and I was just cutting it out. I removed the dash, lowered the steering column, etc.

I think that depends on your climate and car-condition... but yeah.. don't expect it to lift up like a rug everywhere. Even though mine does. Hehe.

I'd love to see the dash write-up.. post a link if you find it... because I just searched and couldn't.

thinking back, my carpet was saturated with coolant from a leaky heater core, and it smelled like ***. Maybe that's where some of the bad memories come from

I took my dash out, its not hard there are 2 bolts on either side of the dash, 2 bolts on either side of the tranny tunnel, 2 bolts holding the steering colomn to the dash frame and 3 along the back,
