How to tell a S4 engine from a S5?
when i bought my car the guy said it had a 91 motor so i was wondering if there is anyway of telling the engines apart from the outside of them. Because i am trying to make my car run good and havent had any luck with it yet instead of hesitating at 3500rpm not it hesitates and makes a poping noise from the motor at 2100RPM

Easy, you'll know it's an s5 if it's overrated
Or you can just look at the intake manifold and spot the difference.
Just get on ebay and look at what an s4 or s5 looks like you should be able to spot the differences.

This was just covered in a previous thred, use the "search"!!!!!!
and the two biggest things are the OMP and AFM the OMP is electical on the s5 and mechanical on the S4 and the AFMs look different.

OMP is the oil metering pump and your AFM should be N370 if its S5. The OMP is (if your looking directly at the front of the block) in the lower left of the block... oh yeah and those pics are WAY too big to see anything, resize them a little...

how else can i tell. im going to go in the dark and take pics hopefully the flash works good. Also where is the knock sensor exactly where should i look otherwise i will take pics of the engine from all diff angles So the car could be running this bad cuz its running on a S4 ECU and a a n318 MAF? How about the Idle adjust which says n326 on it and i can adjust it to either rich or lean but when i do nothing happens.

just make sure that you take a pic of the box that the oil lines are going in to and if it is an S5 then the ECU is for sure why your car is running bad you need the N370 and im not sure if the MAF would make a difference, im assuming so the S5 TII swap im doing right now has the N370 MAF so im guessing you need that too... Im not sure about the knock sensor or the idle adjust... sorry

see theres alot of problems with that, you have an S4 chassi and an S5 engine, the S4 harness wont work with the s5 computer and the S5 harness wont work with the S4 computer. So for my swap im using the S4 harness, and S4 computer, and having to rewire a little fo make it work with the engine harness. but because the OMP is electric in the S5 and mechanical in the S4 its not going to work with the S4 comptuer, to solve this you either have to change your front cover of the S5 engine to an S4 engine cover making the OMP mechanical again or premix your gas with two stroke oil. this is what we will be doing until we can get a stand alone microtech to solve that issue. BUT MAKE SURE YOU PREMIX EVERYTIME YOU FILL UP OR YOULL RUIN THE ENGINE...

oh yeah and your coolant filler neck if it was S4 WOULD NOT be on the radiator, it would be by the engine on the left side. but your coolent fill is on the radiator, its an S5 buddy...

From what was posted, it looks like you have an S4 harness. That little silver box, if i remember right is the resistor box for the low inpedence injectors used in the S4 cars. S5 cars used high impedence injectors and didn't use that box. Also looks like an S4 AFM and an S4 coolant filler neck.
I would critique a bit more, but I'm not all that familier with S5 cars.
