How to take mirrors apart?

Hi guys,

I have a set of S4 turbo mirrors that I want to strip down to the shell for painting. What is the trick to taking them apart? The screws are out and both the glass piece and the black piece that mounts next to the car are loose but won't let go. I don't want to break these things by forcing them.

Which screws did you pull from the glass? There's four.

Second, there's probably some wires that'll need to be fished out also, they might be hanging it up.

What "black piece that mounts next to the car" are you talking about?

FWIW, I always just mask the mirror. Too much aggrivation, time and effort for the benefit of pulling them.

the way i did it was i pried the glass itself out if the rubber surrounding (the rubber that protects and holds the edge of the glass). do this with caution as the glass can break very easy. after that it pretty much straight forward.

The screws were out when I got them. Behind the glass, it looks like 2 were on the outer edge (furthest from car) and two more close to each other at the inner bottom corner.

It's not the wires holding it back, they move around inside freely.

I meant the triangle piece that the wire exits the mirror thru. Both this piece and the glass part are loose but not letting go.

I'll mask if I have to but would rather not as it will be a complete color change and they are already half taken apart.

I tried popping the glass out, but it looked like I was going to break it so I stopped. Wasn't sure if it was glued in or not. Might have to risk it anyway.

its stuck on with some white goo. just pry out the edges and then start lifting from one corner slowly to another slowly.

I decided to try it on a regular NA mirror first. I found the goo and sure enough, I broke the glass. These things really are nasty.

No joke...the white goo is not the biggest enemy here. The plastic backing behind that edges around the mirror is real tight. There's a screw behind it holding the plastic to the mirror frame (as you've noticed at this point.

When replacing my mirror (was cracked) las year I mistakenly snapped the new mirror on before putting the screw back. I was lucky not to break it.

Lesson learned...if the mirror is fine, just mask it.

Screw it. Got it back together the best I can. Can't get a screw driver in there properly, so a couple screws aren't tight and one is missing, but she'll hold. Masking will have to do. I'm just going to end up wrecking them if I try anymore, thanks for the advice anyway.
