If you compare stock cars, then keep both of them stock. If you compare mod'ed cars, then have them both mod'ed. Personally, the 84-89 Z cars are boats...

What are you talking about Revin? The last I checked, Nissan Motors profitted over a billion $ last quarter. Nissan mother company (Renault) is doing pretty good (as least compared to Ford) too. On the other hand, Mazda has always been in financial trouble. Now, Ford just lost more billion $ (something like $4.5 bil) and will layoff around 35,000 people. I think Mazda will pull out of the US market before Nissan will.

This site indicates it runs a 15.0 in the 1/4. (is it safe to assume that '96 was the fastest year?) A TII is better than that. We can safely assume 15.0 is a tad conservative, but the numbers you'd find from a magazine, etc. on the TII are conservative as well.
I like the looks of the 300ZX better than a FC! However, I think it's fairly evident that the RX-7 n/a to 300ZX n/a, or TII to ZX turbo is a better car. Look at all of the major factors and the RX-7 comes out clearly ahead. That's why I bought mine and not a 300ZX. Not to mention that they are expensive, regardless of year.

Check out www.car-stats.com They have it broken down by year + tranny. Stats vary alot depending on the driver. 300ZXTT's are TOUGH to launch due to the Multi-link Antisquat rear suspension (? think that't the name).

From my experience, 300Zs and just plain Nissans in general are a pain in the butt to work on. Nissan seems to build their cars so you have to pull the engines to make even the simplest of repairs (of course there may be some exceptions with a few of their models, but not on the ones I have worked on). On top of that, Nissan's parts are even more expensive than Mazda (unless things have changed in the past couple of years).

No offense, but you are WAY of base IMHO. My Maxima is cheap, and reliable. Nissan engines are built like TANKS. There is one guy on the Maxima forum with almost 400k miles on the VG30E (same engine as the 84-89 Z) 250k is not uncommon AT ALL. Just as an example, my Maxima has 166k miles on it and runs PERFECT. It doesn't burn a drop of oil and starts and idles better than my TII did with 21k miles. Parts are cheap if you know where to buy them from. Courtsey Nissan out of Texas sells parts at basically dealer cost, so basically any Nissan part you need you can get CHEAP. Nissan also builds their cars to last, and the parts that break they upgrade. For example the window regulators on the Maxima are known to break, therefore Nissan redesigned it... and sells the replacement part (that should NEVER break) for $56 + shipping.
I've never worked on a Z car, but I have worked on a 200SX SE-R and I have worked on my Maxima. Both cars are SUPER well designed to be worked on. No "hidden hose under the manifold". No **** poor designs. The car was designed to be worked on and is VERY straight forward. I haven't found a bolt yet on my Maxima that was a PITA to get to. I think it goes without saying that the RX-7 (espeically the TII with THE hose) can be a REAL pain.
In general, I believe that Nissan builds a better car than Mazda... Mazda on the other hand builds a more FUN car than Nissan. That's why I have the ULTIMATE setup. I have a Nissan as a daily driver and a Mazda as a fun car.

well, if u just want something that looks nice, and attracts chicks, an NA 300zx is prolly going to be more yr thing. and NA's break far less things than turbo charged cars, so repair costs are going to be far less frequent (with de power comes de pain)
if u want performance, get a turbo FC, not an NA 300zx.
the VG30DETT is a very tough engine, but they are getting on in years now, and they are not fun to work on or modify. trust me. been there, done that.
if u want a chick magnet that goes like a cut snake, and handles like a go-kart, get an FD.
btw, www.aus300zx.com is a pretty good ZX site if u r interested.

I drove one 300z '87 for one month, because my car was in the mechanic. The handling was the worse. It feel like you are trying to drive a COW down the high way.

I have an '86 rx7 n/a. my friend wanted and rx7 after he drove it and was with me when i beat one of those v6 camaros. but now he wants to get a '90 300zx 2+2 n/a. when or if he gets this, how would we do head to head. and if the results are in his favor, what do i need to do to beat him?

I think the original poster was thinking of a Z31 model, versus the newer Z32 (ala twin-turbo) ones.
Personally, the older Z31's are too heavy - hell, the newer Z32's are heavy also.  Even turbo'd, I've NEVER lost to a Z31.  For some off reason, running into a Z31 turbo with some drive with a chip on his shoulder is pretty damn easy. I've smoked a good half dozen of these cars, since I guess my trashy looking FC don't look too much of a threat to them.  When are they going to learn. I guess their cars with the big "300ZX TURBO" sticker on the side of the door and the "TURBO" badge on the back makes them feel invulnerable?
Sorry, don't mean to put down those cars (I actually like the body stying myself), but the chassis is really heavy and costs too much money to make "fast" compared to an FC (Turbo II)...
