How strong are the stock TII clutches??

How long do they last?? and r they strong clutches that can be beat on a little with out wearing lots??

Im too poor to afford a $400 street/race clutch and the stock clutch is only $206 w/o tax.

I need a new clutch asap!!!The car isnt moving much when u step on it and the smell of burning clutch isnt to pleasant.

Stock clutches are good up to 250hp and then the start to slip and slop. Get an ACT clutch. Good for about 300+

Yea but those r double the price of a stock clutch also. Im planning on keeping the car mainly stock for almost 2 years until im done college.

Im just going to go the TID mod, gut cats or maybe full exhaust, and a fuel pump if needed.

I've done a few clutch jobs and on the RX-7 it will take me at least 6-7 hrs on a stock car. If it's been worked on/modded (ie. not 15 yr old exhaust components), it is much easier.

I could see myself doing it in 4.5-5 hours tops.

How are you able to accomplish this?

On topic: The stocker will last you quite awhile if you break it in properly, and do not mod the car excessively. Mine "slightly" started slipping when I put on a full exhaust running 13psi. The pilot bearing went out before I had a chance to annhilate it after more mods.

I have a 6-puck ACT now, and I love it.

well my car has more then enough power for me since im not used to the turbo yet. Im planning on keeping it stock for atleast a year.

My brother in law in a mechanic and he does most of my car work for cheap. I just wanted to give him a time estimate of how long it will take before he starts. He is mainly a domestic mechanic but the clutches etc.. are the same.

and how excactly do u wear a clutch in??dont drop the clutch at high rpms?what above shifting mad quik yo??is that alright??

Just TID and Full exhaust? That's your 250hp the stock clutch can handle right there, no? Mine fragmented w/ TID and RB downpipe/presilencer shifting hard. I vote for spending the $$ now, so you can mod it later. Just stop eating, thats what I used to do when saving up for something...

Drive the car carefully, like you're breaking in the engine. With the clutch freshly installed, warm up the car at idle, in neutral, and then shut it off and let it cool. Then start it, let it warm up, and go for a drive around the block.

Avoid full throttle, high rpms, and shifting "mad kwik yo". DO NOT DROP THE CLUTCH for any reason.

Drive this way for around 1000 kms, then consider it broken in. Can't all be freeway kms, just light city driving is best.

Most importantly: Get your flywheel machined!!

Are you KIDDING me? It takes you that long? I can almost have my engine out in that time. One hour to pull the tranny, 30 minutes to change the clutch, and an hour putting the tranny back on, tops. Probably can go much faster than that, but we won't argue.

Yes, I'm kidding

I am very careful, and take my time when working on my car. Working with stock components requires ALOT more time than it would otherwise. Even so, unless you are doing it half-assed, it's still going to take a hell of alot longer than 1.5 hrs. Come on now, I live with a mechanic (ASE_Joe)

So you can: jack the car up on jackstands, remove starter, remove speedo cable/reverse connections/ground, disconnect/remove driveshaft, remove shifter, remove stock exhaust components, then crossmember and transmission bolts, then have someone push down on the engine so the tranny clears the shifter area, and remove transmission, then inspect and/or remove/replace the pilot bearing, throw out bearing, input shaft, remove the clutch/pp, remove the flywheel (not counting time to have it machined), then install the flywheel, align/install clutch/pp making sure to cross tighten the bolts, then benchpress and align the tranny, and re-install everything.

1.5 hours? My only explanation, is you do a half-assed clutch job. You are probably so quick at it, because you have to replace components all the time that you fail to inspect/replace.
