how to set up timing

yeah i'm doing timing and i'm not sure how to set up the engine to be top dead center...it's a 86 non turbo

The online and free factory service manual in its Fuel and Emissions section show how to set the timing. Much like the jpg attached.

Did you pull the CAS (crank angle sensor)? Or are you just talking about which timing mark to use? Or maybe you don't have the original pulleys?

the owner before me mess up the pulley and i can't find the right spot.

Do a serarch on the 2nd generation forum. Use the Name HAILERS and the word TDC.

I wrote a tread showing how to find, with accuracy, TDC.

At the BOTTOM of this article http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/articles/demystifying.html, is a method of getting in the ballpark for TDC. Personally I would not use it for setting timing. I can show you a rotor Housing, that has suffered severe detonation (say the word collapse), from using that method. Sucks.
