HOw rusted is too rusted for the car to be tagged `not worth working on`
I have a few surface rust on the rx7 and also a couple of rust spots under the body of my FC. the door frames and doors itself are rusted too.

my triumph is in really bad shape, rust outs all over the place, but i still have full intentions of fixing them all and rebuilding it from the ground up.
so it's really up to how much you want to keep your car on the road. but there is a point when the amount of work needed to keep the car "in shape" will excede the price of the car, "totalling it" kind of. frame rust is a big pain in the ***, and that, to me, is the biggest pain to fix.
but it's really up to you, my friend. to me, the peace of mind that my car isn't slowly falling apart is worth most rust work.
Cancer (rust) is a bad thing if you don't know anything about body work. Think about all the places you can't see that are rusting away.....once you fix all the places you can get to...then you paint....6+ months goes by and you start seeing rust bubbles popping up under your new paint job....you'll be pissed.
If the rust goes THROUGH the metal, don't screw with it.
This requires grinding all the rust and then welding in new metal to fix properly.
If this rust is on a structural member, it gets very tricky to not compromise the strength.
Rust holes in panels that can be replaced (i.e. front fenders) is not a big deal.
Personally, I don't think these cars are THAT hard to find...yet.
Yes, they are slowly disappearing, but bargains are still around if you look.
