Ok, I just bought me some Yokohama ES100 tires. All 4 are 225/50/15. My problem is that they wont fit up front but will in the back. I was told that 225 was the widest I could fit up front and was wondering if the springs/strut setup is different on GXLs as opposed to on the base model.

Im kinda pissed that I just spend $320+ on tires and find out that they do not fit because someone told me false info.

If they are not, what would be my best/cheapest option to fix this problem.

why are you running such small tires? you're 1in short already...

 

So I will have the same rolling diameter as my old 14" wheel/tire combo. This way my gearing isnt different.

 

oh i didn't realize you had the 14s what size are they stock?

 

You will need coilovers to run 225 in the front, because the front spring/shock is to wide and doesn't give you egnough clearence for 225.
The cheapest way to go is to use Ground Control Coilovers or to go for a full coilover package.

 

No Im running the 15s on my car now, but am running a smaller series tire to make it the same diameter as the 14s w/stock tires. The 15s w/stock tire size is larger in diameter than the 14s w/stock tire size.

 

coil overs won't give more space... the most narrow point is the shock spring holder itself. which stays with GC coilovers

I have 225's on the stock 16" turbo rims. when everyone says they have 225's in the front they are probably talking about the turbo rims...

what rims are you using? stock rx7 15" rims? if so 225 is pretty wide for those rims anyways... weither they clear or not. as they are what 6" wide?

if they are not stock rx7 rims. then the offset is probably off

 

Well then Im just ******* ecstatic that someone told me that I could run 225s up front no problem. I guess my cheapest route would be to sell my tires and get some smaller ones.

 

Anybody else have any input on this? The GXLs have the AAS and the I know the sport model has TII suspen. so does the GXL have the TII suspension as well? And would it even matter?

How about changing the offset alittle with a wheel spacer? Would this just totally jack up my handling?

 

i think he was saying the offset of the stock turbo rims put the rim itself further from the shock to run the 225's.

i dont see why a spacer could jack the handling...it will just put the rim out wider and probably give you a bit 'better' handling...i dont know how it will affect scrub radius though.

 

what wheels are they? are they stock wheels, or aftermarket?

225 is too wide for those rims anyways... the rims are too narrow.

 

I do understand they are alittle too wide, but other people seem to be running that tire size with no complaints.tire opinions

 

I have 225/50-15 Falkens on my 15" vert rims, and they fit with at least a fingers width to spare. And the 'vert rims have the same exact offset.

The Falkens even have a extra wide side wall with Rim protector edge that sticks way out over most other tires.

Is there perhaps something wrong with your suspension Brian???

 

Not that I know of. It seems to handle good still. Sometime I will make some measurements comparing my GXL to my base, but dont have the time now. So you are running 225 up front on your car Icemark? BTW thanks for the info.

 

Yes...there should be anough room under there for those tires. I know my GTU, my base model, and my GXL will all fit my Soop's 225/50R16's with at least a half an inch.

 

if you run small spacers in the front, they should work fine. that's the way my FC is set up right now, but I'm going to go back to 215s asap, since personally I don't really trust spacers.

just put a lock washer on each lug.

 

225/50's fit nice on my FD wheels up front

 

I think he was concerned about stock wheels without spacers.

 

I have the S4 GXL Balony Slicers and I am running 225 50 15 without any problems. I have AAS as well.

Not sure why you are having problems. Sorry I couldn't help you.
