An NA should never run richer than 11.7 or so. That is ignorantly rich...FD's don't run that rich under full boost!

That might explain why my car gets 16 MPG, always has blackened spark plugs, and blackens the tail pipe a day after I clean it out.

Sure there's not some issue causing it to run so rich?

I knew they ran rich when the intake and exhaust was opened up but DAMN! That's insanely rich. There's certainly a reason they shoot fire out the tailpipes. That must be why I get a slight hesitation/bucking above about 7000rpms, the mixture's having trouble burning because it's so rich.

That just makes me want a Megasquirt even more/even sooner.

FWIW, I dont think his setup is running properly for whatever reason to produce those results. Most clean running NA's in good health will burn quite leaner, and leave tan deposits on the plugs after running for several thousand miles. I'd look for mid 11's to mid 13's AFR on a nonturbo engine in proper running condition.

The reason they seem to run richer when the exhaust is opened, is because the cat is gone. The cat used to convert the excess fuel, which was always present, so it didnt smell and shoot flames. Taking it off just reveals the condition which has always existed in the engine but was hidden by the stock exhaust.

Yeah... I figured part of the reason my car's exhaust smells like unburnt fuel when it's cold is because my pre-cat was replaced with a DP. Although it doesn't quite explain the light fuel smell that sometimes comes from the engine bay, though...

On that note, I also replaced my O2 sensor today (I bought it weeks ago but I didn't buy the socket until today...).

i have no clue why it is running that rich with the stock fuelling. i have pretty much every bolt-on that is possible to put on, so i expected it to run rich, but not that rich. my TPS was a bit out of whack, which i readjusted, so i maybe that might do it. unless the SAFC was putting in more fuel, but i just loaded the second data file, which doesn't have any correction on the maps. the car seems to run great. engine is strong, pulling about 9.0 all around on the Mazda compression tester. and yes, spark plugs are tan. even before the wideband i did lean it out a bit on the SAFC because i knew it was rich. but who knows what possess it to run that rich. anyways, i have already leaned it out to ~12 AFR on WOT, but i'm going to aim for ~13.

i can actually get cruise to ~17 AFR before it starts to sputter

more reason for me to hurry up and finish building that MegaSquirt i have lying around...

I don't have a datalog, but my s4 n/a on stock ECU with my AEM wideband would get into the mid to high AFR readings. Something is messed up on this car. When my CAS was off and advanced pretty far it actually read a lot leaner.

Some of the *problem* could be the afm. As in *out of adjustment*. Then again, when I had a wideband on my 86 n/a, I noticed at approx 5 grand it got pig rich for aprox 1000 rpms or so. Memory.

i think my timing might be a few degrees retarded also, which would make it richer.

actually i'm looking at the SAFC, and the 2nd data file might be messed up or corrupt. it doesn't save any changes i make. not quite sure why. i reseted the SAFC, and i'm going to try zero correction again, and i will post it up to see if it is any different.

right now, i am taking away -10 across the range at high throttle, and at WOT i am getting about 12 AFR.
