If you just use a fine wire brush you wont mess anything up. I just did this yesterday on the manifolds and it was SO much easier then the old way I did it. If you really dont want to, you can use the old way, which for me was: Scrap whatever off you can initially. Then apply gasket remover spray. Wait 5 mins, scrap with gasket scraper. Reapply, scrape again repeat over and over till you get most of it off and then use fine sandpaper to completly smoothen it out.

So much easier to use wire brush

Using a flat file is better than sandpaper if you're very careful to keep the file in direct contact with the mating surface as to not bevel the face of the manifold.

But for all practicle purposes, you really just need to get the majority of the crap off with gasket remover and a scraper. Our gaskets are so thick you should have trouble making them leak, rather than having dificulty sealing them.

You should have rags or paper towels in the runners when cleaning the surface. When finished take the shop vac to it and suck all the crap you can out and then carefully remove the rags as to not get anything down the runners.

Gasket material shouldn't pose a problem to anything inside the motor, but I wouldn't want anything at all other than clean filtered air going in mine.

Block the ports, all the holes, apply gasket remover, wait 10 minutes, rub off with scotchbrite...

would the local auto parts store have that permatex gasket remover stuff?

i bought a can of the sealer that mazdatrix recomends but after reading the can it sounds more like a high temp glue it actually says to use it like a contact cement. i bought it obviously so that it would seal up right but also so that i would be able to get the gasket off fairly easily if i had to

what do you guys/girls use for gasket sealer

yes yes BLOCK ALL THE PORTS...I made the mistake while removing my LIM gasket and a 1" piece fell into the front intake runner..later that week at the track and it sucked in through the side housing... diagnosses.. blown apex seal on the FRONT Rotor I don't think it was a coincidence....
