make? model?

if it is series 5 (89-91) then there is a lifetime dealer recall on the belts.

if it is a 86-88 however, you are on your own. if you are mechanically inclined you may wish to try and clean the retractor assembly, or simply replace the belts (which after 15 years is probably a good idea anyway).

Is the warrenty good for the current owner or do you have to be the original owner?

It is not a warrenty, it is a recall. It is for the life of the car no matter how many times it fails (with only an estimate 10,000-20,000 S5 coupes still on the road it isn't like Mazda is hurting to have to fix them time and time again).

Does anyone know if the failure is due to electrical problems or mechanical? Mine is an S5, and seems to have more trouble the colder it gets, I was about to pull it apart and fix it myself anyway. Anybody??

OUUUUUUU YUCK.

The worst thing about the US spec S5 cars is those lame mouse belts.

Maybe you mean, put the S4 and Canadian S5 belts into a US spec S5 coupe.

Close!
I have an S4 Candian Car, and took out the ugly *** "maroon" interior, and swapped in Candian S5 Black interior, including the belts.......... The style of the belts didn't differ, other than their colour.
