HOW oh how do you get a 2000rpm idle down to 750rpm?

did it sound like mechanical popping (binding differential, u-joints etc), or like a chemical popping? Mine has always sounded a little bit rough and uneven, even when bone stock. If you havent adjusted the throttle damper correctly (so that the throttle actuator contacts it about a 1/4" or so before it contacts the hard stop, IIRC its in the FSM), the throttle can snap closed too quickly and cause it to go a little rich, causing some popping or backfires in the exhaust.

I don't know to tell you the truth. I think it is the engine though as it does it when i rev it in my driveway as well.
And that dampner is working as good as it can, it might be bad but it is working as good as it can ATM.
I just tried to get it inspected and did a lot better then i thought i would, passed everything except 1, and that was only failed by a little. I think it is running too rich. Look for new thread to help fix this one...

had a similar problem with my 'vert.... i sprayed the motor with carb cleaner / etc and did the whole gambit... which didn't show me anything.
It wasn't until I pressurized the manifold with air and coated the engine with soapy water did I find ALL of the vacuum leaks.
Where my car had the major issue was with the injectors - all of the gaskets weren't rubbery any more and they were all leaking - top and bottom.
I bought a kit from Beck Arnley (?) that provided the whole kit (not just o rings). After that was installed - the car was fine.
I pressurized the manifold with my shop vac set to "blow"....tied a rag around the hose, then duct taped it to the MAF sensor.
