how often should u redline the engine?
noob question.
i know you're supposed to drive the car HARD to keep carbon from building up inside.
my question is how often and for how long? my gf has a 87 n/a and she says she redlines it once everytime she drives it, but knowing how she drives i think she only brings it up to redline (in 2nd or 1st gear) *once* and drives the rest of the time babying it. (no higher then 4k)
is she gonna **** it up this way?

No.
The N/A's are a LOT better about being dogged than TII's They have Higher Compression and run leaner.
Your GR is smart by not redlining it in 3rd... if memory servs me right,,,, redline in 3rd in my old GTU was at about 85 MPH or so!!!
Also... you don't HAVE to redline it... there's a reason its a redline.. things start to fly apart something thereafter!!! (OK we all know the redline is low because of liability issues.. but thats besides the point) A good high revving spirited romp every now and then will do the trick

a redline a day keeps the mechanic away. i do it atleast a few times a week, although with gas prices as they are ive been very conservative with my right foot. my only recomendation is not to go over the redline on a s4, everytime i did the car really didnt seem to like it on my 87 n/a.

The samething kinda happened to me...It's been a while, about 4 months, since I redlined my S4 and then about two weeks ago I began to redline it again. Now there's puffs of smoke coming out of the exhaust. This didn't happen before and I doubt that my seals managed to crap out when I began to redline again. But it might also be possible for my seals to crap out during the time I didn't redline my car.

I think I'm addicted
Redline a day =D
even Icemark says it (in the what's the best oil for FC? thread)
should be driven hard daily to blow out low temp deposits left by oils =)

I don't claim to be an expert here, but if you redline it and it blows all kinds of **** out, you're probably fine. If it does that when you're really pushing it, then goes back to normal under normal driving, it's probably just burning up the **** that's built up. Now, you end up smoking all the time afterwards, no matter what, then I'd be worried.
That reminds me, I haven't redlined in a couple of weeks. I was driving hard to keep up with some FD's, and my car loved every minute of it, honestly I had no idea my little NA was that fast.

I think the important thing is just to get over 4K at least once every day so old fuel doesn't clog up the secondary injectors. Keeping carbon deposits down has as much to do with using good oil and changing it often than it does revving the **** out of the motor regularly.
That said, I like to hear the little redline buzzer (and maybe get a little sideways) every time I drive.

if your a 6K plus shifter in your daily driving habits redlining really is a moot point.
If your a 3K plus shifter - sell the car to someone who drive as mentioned above please!

My car sees red during autox, sometimes past red by not paying attention. Plus the car is faster up that high.

I've hit the limiter in 2nd one time just to see what it would do. Needless to say, it sounded sweet past 8,000rpms. I redline at least 2 times a day, if nothing else just to hear that "EEEEEEEEEEEHHHH" buzzer dealy.
