how much would you pay?

i'm looking at a 87 TII to buy, and this will be my first rx7 so i dont know that much about rotaries. it has 85,0000 miles and he is the third owner of the car. the body has a some scratches and little dents and a small spot of rust on the sun roof. the engine started right up and felt strong. it has a bonez down pipe and catback
the transmission grinds 5th gear when you shift at high rpms, but not at lower rpms. its going to need a clutch in a year. it emits a blue smoke at idle after taking it up neat redline. he said the omp was injecting too much oil, but i think it something more serios. i was thinking it is the oil control rings or the oil seal, but i dont know. if it is one of these two, does the engine need a rebuild?
he is asking $3700, but how much would you pay?
any help will be appreciated, thanks
Anthony

Consider this. I just recently purchased a ALL STOCK 88turbo 2(only mod it had was full racing beat exhaust) , with leather, elecwindows, pwr locks, all the conviences. Interior in excellent condition. And it had a rebuilt motor with around 7k on it. The body had 99k on it. Very minor body scrape on it. And i got it for $2700 It does the normal smoke on start-up, and thats it.

tell him "3000 cash, right now". his eyes will light up when you say 'cash' and 'now' in the same sentence, thus canceling out the fact that you lowered the price 700 dollars, resulting in him forgetting.

87 TII with original 86k, no damage/accidents, faded-*** paint/interior, broken handle and no mirror, strong motor and turbo with no smoke or starting issues - $1500 cash. Using the word CASH is like holding candy infront of a 3-year-old.

If you have 3000 to spend, search around for a really good specimen, or a S5 TII.

All pretty normal. The 5th gear grind may even be normal, but it's difficult to tell over the internet.

Who told you that, Miss Cleo? FYI the clutch is either good now, or needs replacing now. A fading clutch lasts a couple hundred miles, not a year (unless you only drive a couple hundred miles a year, lol). Plan on about $450 parts and labor, but you may want to get an estimate at your local rotary shop just to make sure. Even better, you should get the car checked out by a good RX-7 mechanic prior to buying it.

I think you know more than the current owner, lol. Definitely get it checked out.

Blahaha, Blue Book even in Excellent condition is only about $2,500. This car is only worth about $1,500-2,000.
