How much would you pay for a 1988 RX7 From the Original Owner?

I am looking at purchasing my first FC. Its a 1988 GXL RX7. He is asking $2000.

It is in really nice condition. The only exterior problems I have noticed is the clear coat fading. There are no dents. All power windows and sunroof work.

Interior is in mint condition. Back leather seats are in great condition. Front seats are great with the exception that the drivers seat is 20years old. It is owned by a middle aged gentleman who bought it in the fall of 1988.

The only problems i have found that my cause concern is it idles. When the motor is cold, it has a rough idle. When the motor warms up, it idles fine. No leaks. Its a southern car. No rust.

Lastly, when the A/C is on, the car has a tendecy to die out?

He has every receipt since the purchase with original invoice. Worth $2000?

Thanks Guys!

Well down here that is a GREAT price. Down here cars half that quality sell for that much.

I have been looking for the last 6+ months and to find ANY RX7 for less then $2000 is pretty rare. much less one in good condition.

But i don't know what the prices are like up there.

I am fully aware of KBB. I take it with a grain of salt though. I was just curious as to what some other members thought about it. I am pretty sure he will take $1800 as it is his 3rd car.

sounds like a good deal. i always prefer to buy from the origanol owner, because usually, they take alot better care of it than the next ones.

Because there are so many people who think that asking other idiots on the internet is more accurate than referencing the established valuation sources.

I noticed...

I think we should make a new subsection...
"Give me an overpriced value of me FC!"

Well, there are inflated prices, lowballers, and everything in between. I think it should be "Give me a random number from 1 to 20,000".

Getting other people's advice is never a bad idea, then one can digest the responses. Naturally, the ultimate decision lies with the buyer, but values are different for each.
The KBB is a good tool for the average DD, not something that might be considered unique.

FYI:
I'm the original owner of a '89 TII which hasn't seen the rain since 1992, garaged, in perfect condition, and I've been offered much more than the KBB estimate:

Excellent $3,825
Good $3,415
Fair $2,860

In fact, I'd laugh at a person that offered me $3800 for the car!

How many miles on the car? As for the idle that's normal, probably just a vacuum leak somewhere. I'm the original owner of mine...bought brand new back in 1989...and my car idles awful when cold, just haven't taken the time to track down the vacuum leak somewhere. Sounds like a heck of deal for the car, but it also depends on how many miles are on the car.

No, that is not normal.

It could be anything from a vacuum leak to an ignition problem to a cracked apex seal.
It's FC "enthusiasts" that tend to overlook "minor" problems like this and overvalue a used car (like this).
This is actually the opposite of what you should be doing - because you know the car, you should be using every single (minor) problem to negotiate the price down.

Nobody even bats an eye when the OP mentioned problems with the paint.
According to KBB, that's "fair" condition and NOT "good" condition.

Now, this is not saying you cannot drop the cash for it.
I've heard of idio...er...folks paying $6,000 for a badly running Zenki FC turbo.
It's your money.

Thanks Ted.

I am new to them, and I know when I owned a 240, i wouldnt go by KBB. Mine were always sold by how the market was.

The car has 180k. The only reason I batted a eye is because its the original owner with all the documentation from the very beginning.

Thanks to all that helped.

Cheers to those who mocked!

$2000 is ok if you like the car and compression is good. I think people get too worked up over a couple hundred dollars on a 20 year old car.
