I wanted to loose more weight and I figured there is alot under the dash.

What can I remove under the dash? I want to keep the dash shell and the guages and keep the fan and defrost/heat. Is there anything under there I can remove?

How much does it all weight?

I dunno what all yo can remove.... but the dash is QUITE HEAVY. The glove box door alone weighs 6lbs .

There is THICK Steel plating behind everything. I'd assume it's for crash protection .

 

I pulled out the passenger speaker housing and it has 2 wire harnesses that go to small boxes. Can I just unplug these? What are they for?

 

I took apart a 91 wreck. The dash (plastic part) is reasonably light, not much to save there. There is a metal beam from one side of the car to the other. I suspect it is there to improve crash protection. As I recall, its not very easy to remove, lots of parts around it.

 

It probably also helps to stiffen the chasis.

 

speaking of weight reduction -

Is there anything else besides taking out the a/c .. and stuff... what else is there to do... to reduce the weight in your car?

 

You can take off the bumper and remove the fiberglass bumper support. Go on the inside and remove all trim pieces. Also going to manual mirrors/windows. Remove carpeting...

 

The entire glovebox can't wiegh 6 lbs, what are you talking about? Thick steel behind everything? Seriously, what are you talking about?

 

It's true... there is a big thick steel plate in the glove box door, several of them actually.

YES there is steel in there for your protection. go out now and just open your glovebox by letting it drop, i bet it'll break the plastic at the end of the rods. no seriously, it does weigh alot for what it is.

 

I would be afraid of the front bumper caving in under speed with the styrofoam and fiberglass gone. If it won't, that would be cool. Just don't hit anything

I saw a late 70's Camaro with the bumper support removed, and the nose was pushed in so far by the end of the 1/4 (I think it was trapping about 110-120) that the screwed up aerodynamics were probably negating any gain from the weight savings.

 

I have had my front bumper and the supports out for atleast 1 years and have done well over 140 mph and I have had no problems with it caving in, or any problems.
